Nestled approximately 30 miles south of San Antonio, the Texas Department of Transportation's Floresville Maintenance Office serves the rapidly growing yet peaceful community of Wilson County. Tasked with maintaining 744.88 lane miles across 803.70 square miles, the Floresville team oversees a vital network of Farm-to-Market roads, State Highways, and U.S. Highways. Our responsibilities extend across the entire Right of Way, offering employees different opportunities to grow and develop specialized skills. Annual Salary Ranges

General Transportation Tech I (A16): $40,918- $61,130

General Transportation Tech II (A17): $42,976- $64,469

General Transportation Tech III (A18): $45,521- $71,055

This position is for a General Transportation Tech I, II or III, depending on business needs and applicant qualifications. TxDOT reserves the sole right in determining the level of position based on business needs and the applicant's work experience, education, skill level and all other appropriate factors.

Performs routine transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.

Essential Duties:

General Transportation Tech I

  • Assists in identifying, repairing and installing signs, delineators, mailbox supports and posts; performs basic welding as needed; as required uses/moves equipment/tools, materials and products related to these activities.
  • Assists in providing support to local law enforcement officials at accident sites; assists stranded motorists as required.
  • Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades; flags traffic
  • Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.
  • Move/picks up litter and roadway debris.
  • Operates light equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a quarter cubic yards or less, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper, and mower.
  • Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing and minor repairs on equipment and completes various required reports including time-keeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms, and PMI
  • Sands or cleans bridges and roads, posts warning signs, helps the public and performs other work as directed during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents, and hazardous material spills.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

General Transportation Tech II

In addition to the duties listed above

  • Assists in inspecting traffic control devices and their placement at construction project sites for compliance with specifications for devices; safety laws, rules, regulations and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  • Identifies, repairs, and installs signs, delineators, mail box supports and posts; performs welding; and uses/moves equipment/tools, materials and products.
  • Operates heavy equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a half cubic yards or more, tractor-trailer haul truck, large dragline, shovel, paint striper, and dump truck.

General Transportation Tech III

In addition to the duties listed above

  • May serve as a work crew project lead ensuring work performed meets project specifications.
  • Trains other employees.
  • Identifies, analyzes, and implements solutions for complex maintenance problems
  • Operates complex heavy equipment such as a motor grader, large excavator, heavy bulldozer, crane, herbicide truck, heavy asphalt paving machine, self-propelled asphalt distributor, and profiling/milling machine.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: No education required.

Experience:

General Transportation Tech I: No experience required

General Transportation Tech II: 1 YEAR transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, or related work experience.

General Transportation Tech III: 2 YEARS transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, or related work experience.

*Experience must be in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience.  

(Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated part-time equivalent).  Related technical training or education from an accredited institution may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid driver’s license at the time of application. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

GTT I: Must have a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License with an "N" Endorsement or have obtained a CDL "A” License, within 120 calendar days from date of employment.

GTT II/III: Must have a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License with an "N" Endorsement from date of application

Preferred Qualifications:

Licenses and Certifications: Commercial Driver’s License          

Competencies:

  • Methods, procedures, equipment, and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work
  • Materials used in highway/bridge construction and maintenance
  • The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices
  • Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines, and specification codes
  • Using applicable hand and power tools, equipment, and mechanical devices of the trade
  • Operating light and heavy highway equipment
  • Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others
  • Follow verbal and written instructions

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour
  • Subject to hazards-moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals
  • Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device
  • Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs
  • Standing-prolonged periods of time
  • Walking-moving on foot to accomplish tasks: long distance/from one work site to another
  • Talking-expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words
  • Hearing-perceive sound at normal speaking levels; receive information by oral communication
  • Visual Acuity-operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment

This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical.

Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions. This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.

Must be able to report for duty within 45 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergency situations.
