Description

  • Provide nursing services, including patient phone calls regarding medications and side effects, monitoring patients’ ongoing overall status, administering medication, providing sample medication, etc., as requested by prescribers. 

  • Authorize prescription refills, per Prairie View protocol. 

  • Follow up on psychiatrist’s / ARNP’s / PA’s orders. 

  • Will take all calls of a crisis or emergent nature. 

  • Will meet with patients who present on-site for emergent or crisis care. 

  • Will make arrangements for continued care as directed by physician (admission, contact referral source, support and instruct family, precertification). 

  • Serve as nursing resource to staff and patients, including providing education. 

  • Maintain clinical outcomes within Prairie View standards. 

  • Provide case consultation services, as requested by agencies and organizations.  

  • Serve as a liaison between Prairie View physicians and hospitals, other physicians’ offices, pharmacies, etc.  

  • Communicate regularly with referral sources as needed. 

  • Ensure that all patients who phone in are called back and phone conversations are documented in the patient’s chart. 

  • Assist the Infection Control Coordinator in keeping office staff current on organizational health requirements as needed.  

  • Promote professionalism by discussing personal or patient information in a private area. 

  • Protect patient confidentiality at all times and in all communication. 

  • Maintain accurate and timely records; progress notes are completed within 72 hours. 

  • Coordinate patient medication assistance programs. 

  • Work cooperatively with Utilization Review staff and Treatment Team to assure authorization is in place to provide services, and specific services are identified on the active treatment plan. 

  • Complete forms as instructed by physicians and provide accurate billing information. 

  • Attend and participate in Clinical Services staff meetings and administrative staff meetings as scheduled. 

  • Ensure quality care by meeting with supervisor and attending physicians. 

  • Maintain inventory and security for medications, including samples. 

  • Dispose of used needles, outdated medications, and other regulated materials. 

  • Serve as designated contact for pharmaceutical representatives. 

  • Successfully complete the USDOT (United States Department of Transportation) Medical Waste Training within 90 days of employment and annually, per USDOT statutes 49 CFR 173.22 and 173.6 (b). 

  • Perform Quarterly Spill Kit Audit, including requesting and replenishment of kit supplies and forwarding quarterly audit reports to Safety Committee. 

Qualifications


Minimum Education: Graduate from accredited program of nursing education; BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) degree preferred but not required; current Registered Nurse license with Kansas State Board of Nursing required

· Minimum Experience: Two years in psychiatric nursing preferred

· Must have good command of the English language; must be able to read, communicate verbally and in writing, in a professional manner

· Must have excellent therapeutic communication and relational skills with patients and staff

· Must be able to observe patient demeanor and non-verbal communication for assessment purposes

· Must be able to obtain information and make judgments in emergent situations

· Must be able to observe and interact with patients of all ages

· Must have knowledge about medications and their side effects, or at least the ability to obtain the information quickly

· Must be able to work independently

· Must be willing to have some flexibility in scheduling, to meet patient and organization needs

· Must be able to sit at a desk for period of up to two hours

· Must be able to bend, squat, and reach over head

· Must maintain CEs and Kansas State licensure

· Must have current CPR license

· Must be able to communicate effectively with referral sources and other treatment providers

· Must be proficient at basic keyboarding/word-processing skills

· Must be able to pass Kansas Bureau of Investigation Screen and the Central Registry Screen for both adults and children
