Job Description:

Avery Dennison is looking for a mechanical/design engineer for the Reflective Solutions business based in North America, focused on the traffic and safety industry. In this role, you will provide technical leadership for ultra-precision machining activities and development projects while working in a collaborative environment. This position will utilize complex mathematics, computer simulation and CAD software for the design and development of ultra-precision machine systems. You will work under the leadership of our Director of R&D and will be based at our location in Niles, IL.  To be successful, you should have a strong aptitude for technical work with related project management experience and a real passion for collaborative work in a team-based environment.  
Responsibilities:

  • Broadly applies principles, theories, concepts and techniques of the mechanical engineering discipline.

  • Solves mechanical problems using precision engineering practices.

  • Design complex assemblies and detailed parts of devices, mechanisms, and structures required for Tooling projects in R&D

  • Create manufacturing drawings using GD&T, ASME Y14.5 standards to receive quotes and design proposals.

  • Handles multiple projects simultaneously, meet deadlines, while effectively managing priorities and communicating progress.

  • Check completed layouts and manufacturing drawings for clarity, completeness, conformity to standards, procedures, specifications, and accuracy of calculations and dimensioning.

  • Lead multiple development projects simultaneously while achieving targeted costs, project timing, and customer specifications.

  • Work in a collaborative environment, engaging with machinists, R&D engineers and technicians

  • Manage project work flow through multiple departments in the tooling group

  • Document process details and product drawings in approved digital platforms

  • Provide technical leadership for precision machining activities used in micro-replication processes such as diamond turning, CNC, EDM, lathe, etc

  • Assign jobs to machinists, lab technicians and ensure timely completion and delivery of task

  • Assist with characterization techniques like profilometry, microscopy and interferometry.

  • Utilize strong project management skills to plan and complete project tasks on time.

  • Work with Suppliers to test and qualify new materials,

  • Utilize Enterprise Lean Sigma (ELS) tools and methodologies and follow the stage gate process in development projects and continuous process improvement

  • Follow all corporate and safety policies and procedures.

Qualifications:

B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or related

5+ years work experience in a project management role

Proficient in modeling with CAD/CAM. SolidWorks preferred.

Experience with part design process

Experience with CNC programming


Additional qualifications, which will be considered a strong plus.

M.S. or equivalent advanced degrees.

Experience with precision micro-cutting techniques including but not limited to diamond turning, laser ablation, etc.

Experience managing lab technicians and/or other personnel

The salary range for this position is $100k- $118k/ year.

The hiring base salary range above represents what Avery Dennison reasonably expects to pay for this position as of the date of this posting.
