Immediate Supervisor Title: Nurse Manager


Job Supervisory Responsibilities: Certified Medical Assistants may assume the duties of the office clinical staff with RN or physician supervision General Summary: A nonexempt position responsible for performing a variety of duties. Involved in both the clinical and administrative areas including assisting providers with patient care and handling environmental and organizational tasks. Provide information to patients so they may fully utilize, and benefit from the clinical services.


Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Fulfills patient care responsibilities as assigned that may include checking schedules and organizing patient flow; accompanying patients to exam room; refilling medication per provider’s instructions/orders; collecting patient history; assisting providers/nurses with various procedures; charting patient information per ID Care documentation standards; explaining treatment and procedures to patients; relaying instructions to patients/families; answering patient calls for triage and providing pertinent information.
  • Fulfills clerical responsibilities as assigned that may include sending/receiving patient medical records; obtaining lab/diagnostic reports, hospital notes, etc.; completing forms/requisitions as needed; and updating charts to ensure that information is complete and filed out appropriately.
  • Fulfills environmental responsibilities as assigned that may include setting up equipment according to department protocols; cleaning exam rooms and equipment between patient visits to maintain infection control; ordering, sorting and storing supplies; and restocking exam rooms.
  • Fulfills organizational responsibilities as assigned including respecting/promoting patient rights; responding appropriately to emergency codes; communicating concerns relating to patients and/or staff with immediate supervisor.
  • Fulfills clinical medical assisting responsibilities according to state law, which may include physical examination preparations; drug administration through various routes including injections; prescription verifications with provider’s orders, applying dressings, biohazard waste disposal and monitoring; laboratory procedures including Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines; quality control methods; CLIA-waived testing; venipunctures; specimen handling such as urine, throat, vaginal, stool, and sputum; emergency triage, and first aid.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Work Environment: Nurse’s office and medical exam/treatment rooms. Controlled lighting, air quality and temperature settings. Environmental hazards may be unpredictable including exposure to communicable diseases and biohazards.


Equipment Operated: Standard nursing equipment and supplies including blood pressure machine, thermometer, oxygen tank, AED, syringes, pulse oximetry unit. Office supply equipment including computers, printers, faxes, scanners.

Requirements

Education and Work Experience:

  • High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED)
  • Medical Assistant Diploma from an accredited vocational institution or a community college course in medical assisting
  • Minimum of 1 year of recent experience working in a medical facility/office as a certified medical assistant preferred.
  • Current experience with Electrocardiogram (EKG), vital signs, venipuncture, and injection.

Performance Requirements:

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of health care field and medical office protocols/procedures
  • Knowledge of specific assisting tasks related to medical practice
  • Knowledge of HIPAA and OSHA regulations

Skills:

  • Skill in performing medical assistant tasks appropriately
  • Skill in tact and diplomacy in interpersonal interactions
  • Skill in understanding patient education needs by effectively sharing information with patients and families

Abilities:

  • Ability to learn and retain information regarding patient care procedures

  • Ability to plan, prioritize, and complete delegated tasks
  • Ability to demonstrate compassion and caring in dealing with others

Mental and Physical Requirements: Involves standing, walking, bending, grasping, manipulating and squatting. Occasional need to lift patient during transfer/turn process with or without assistance.
