MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Position Summary:
Reporting to the Administrative Director, with direction from the Registered Nurse, assists the surgeons, anesthesia personnel, Registered Nurse and other professional in the operating room. Performs similar duties in other areas of the hospital as assigned.
- Performs in-room surgical scrub duties; patient positioning and draping; sterile instrument and supplies set-up; effectively working with cardiovascular surgeons.
- Demonstrates working knowledge of care and handling specimens appropriately.
- Assists in preparation of surgical procedures by anticipating needs of physician.
- Able to safely operate all electrosurgical equipment, diagnostic equipment, microscope, laser equipment, video equipment, and disposable equipment, as well as equipment unique to each specialty area.
- Provides a safe, therapeutic environment for patient and families. Uses patient restraints appropriately.
- Works efficiently with physicians and RN’s in the variety of surgical procedures done in the OR/OB, with specialized equipment, trays and instruments.
- Demonstrates an understanding of the principles of asepsis and consistently maintains sterile technique.
- Demonstrates knowledge of anatomy related to procedures.
- Demonstrates knowledge of techniques used by various surgeons for various procedures.
- Able to assemble and troubleshooting all equipment as necessary for procedures.
- Ensures all necessary equipment is in the room prior to the start of a case, including prep, Foley, position devices, etc.
- Answers telephone in a prompt and courteous manner, addressing callers and patients appropriately by name and/or title.
- Performs efficiently in crisis and emergency situations, following established protocols, remaining calm, informing appropriate persons.
- Demonstrates knowledge of age specific care, including but not limited to, identifying the need for additional safety measures, physiological normal values/readings; and assessing skin integrity, behavior, motor skills and/or activities that place patients at risk as well as communicates effectively in a clear, concise, understandable manner. - Demonstrates good use of personal protective equipment and universal precautions.
- Ensures an adequate stock of supplies and proper function of CV equipment.
- Attends hospital sponsored training programs, as required by department.
- Maintains CPR certification.
- Maintains OR Technician certification.
- Maintains technical skill level and adapts to changes in surgical technique and operative intervention modalities.
- Demonstrates knowledge of sterilization and disinfection, as evidenced by practice.
- Demonstrates an understanding of operating room sanitation and assists in its maintenance.
- Monitors for and calls attention to breaks in technique. Communicates to circulating RN and surgeons breaks in technique.
- In conjunction with the RN, conducts accurate sponge, needles, and instrument counts according to departmental policies.
- Performs surgical scrub according to departmental polices.
- Assists in the positioning of the patients and maintains their safety.
- Monitors skin integrity and communicates to circulating RN.
- Accepts assignment as preceptor for new staff.
- Demonstrates a constructive approach during all interactions with staff and nurse manager toward the organization.
- Operates assigned equipment and performs all procedures in safe manner, as instructed.
- Maintains work area and equipment in condition required by the department standards.
- Demonstrates proper body mechanics in all functions.
- Demonstrates knowledge of techniques, procedures and correct use of protective barrier equipment.
- Ensures safe environment by instituting appropriate control measures.
- Foster mature professional relationships with fellow employees in a courteous, friendly manner, as measured by management observation and peer input.
- Demonstrates responsibility for cost containment, conservation of supplies and equipment, as well as other organizational resources.
- Demonstrates sensitivity and respect to patient’s comfort and rights/privacy (confidentiality).
- Participates in staff meeting and in-services determined by the Director and/or nurse manager.
- Limited sick calls according to established policy and procedures.
- Demonstrates willingness and/or assume relative to the department needs of the unit and the nursing department.
- Participates in evaluation of new supplies, equipment and/or instruments.
- Updates and rewrites preference cards as indicated. Communicates changes/needs to OR Manager/Charge Nurse.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Education
- High School graduate or equivalent
Minimum Work Experience and Qualifications
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
Preferred Work Experience and Qualifications
- Minimum one (1) years recent experience in an acute care setting preferred.
- Minimum one (1) years recent experience in OR/OB preferred.
Required Licensure, Certification, Registration or Designation
- American Heart Association BLS Card
- Certification from an approved Surgery Technician School
- Current Los Angeles County Fire Card (or must be obtained within 30 days of employment)
- Assault Response Competency (ARC) required (within 30 days of hire)
