General Description:
The Director of Buildings and Grounds is responsible for the overall planning, coordination, and management of the school district’s facilities operations. This includes ensuring that all buildings and campuses are clean, safe, secure, and properly maintained to support student learning and extracurricular activities. The Director leads custodial, maintenance, and grounds teams, coordinates facility usage for school and community events, and ensures the readiness of school facilities for daily use and special functions—including athletics and weekend programs. The role requires a dynamic leader with strong working knowledge of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and carpentry, while also maintaining a strong level of organizational skills.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide effective leadership and oversight of cleaning, maintenance, and repair operations for all school district buildings and grounds.
Supervise, evaluate, and support approximately 25 full-time and part-time employees, including custodial, maintenance, and grounds staff.
Assign daily and long-term tasks to staff and ensure effective use of labor resources across all district facilities.
Manage and coordinate facility use schedules, including internal school activities and external/community rentals, ensuring appropriate staff coverage and support for all events.
Schedule and assign custodial and maintenance staff to support evening and weekend events, including school functions, performances, and athletic competitions.
Assign and oversee tasks related to preparing athletic facilities—such as fields, gyms, and locker rooms—for practices, games, and competitions.
Maintain and monitor building systems including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and mechanical operations.
Conduct regular facility inspections and implement preventive maintenance programs to ensure safety, cleanliness, and regulatory compliance.
Oversee work order management and ensure timely resolution of maintenance and repair needs.
Collaborate with school administrators and department leaders to meet building needs and support student activities.
Coordinate with and supervise outside vendors and contractors as needed for specialized projects or large-scale repairs.
Prepare and manage department budgets, including tracking of expenses related to supplies, equipment, and contract services.
Respond to emergency situations and facility issues outside regular hours when necessary.
Promote energy conservation, sustainability, and efficiency across facilities operations.
Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal health and safety regulations, including OSHA standards.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Facilities Management, Engineering, Construction, or a related field preferred.
Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible facilities management experience, including supervision of staff.
Experience in a K–12 educational setting preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Strong working knowledge of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and general building systems.
Excellent leadership, organizational, and team management skills.
Proven problem-solving skills with sharp analytical insight.
Ability to schedule and manage staff for regular operations and special events.
Familiarity with scheduling software and computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).
Effective communication skills and the ability to collaborate with school staff, community members, and vendors.
Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as needed.
Working Conditions:
On-site role with frequent travel between school buildings and outdoor facilities.
Physical activity required, including walking, climbing, lifting (up to 50 lbs), and working in varied weather conditions.
Availability for on-call emergencies.
