Summary:

The Lead Dental Assistant is responsible for participating in clinical dental health care assisting the dentist and hygienist at the chair. Lead Dental Assistant will escort patients to and from reception area, reassure a fearful patient with warmth, honesty, and confidence. The individual is also responsible for maintaining supplies, storage and sterilization of instruments. The Lead Dental Assistant must be organized, be able to converse with representatives from vendor companies and work closely with staff to ensure universal precautions are maintained within the dental department.

Responsibilities to include but are not limited to:  

  •  Provides reasonable and prudent dental care for CS-HHC patients. Treats patients and staff respectfully, courteously and appropriately
  •  Participates in clinical dental health care assisting the Dentist and Hygienist at the chair
  •  Responsible for the general care of equipment and ensuring instruments are kept sharp and sterilized
  •  Escorts patients to and from reception area
  •  Maintains functional system of dental charts and assures confidentiality of individual records
  •  Prepares and monitors schedules for routine cleaning and maintenance of operatories, equipment and instruments
  •  Responsible for ordering supplies; maintaining inventory and distributing supplies
  •  Responsible for scheduling all departmental equipment service repairs and work orders as needed (PO’s for Vendors via Procure-IT, Facilities and/or IT depts)
  •  Ensures all logs are filled out correctly and current: SDS sheets added and current, autoclave weekly log, emergency box log, daily maintenance log, A-test, biosonic, and empower solutions, etc.
  •  Ensures proper monthly biohazard disposal (Stericycle)
  •  Responsible for the inventory control and ordering of supplies/instruments
  •  Assists in training Dental Assistants 
  •  Ensures compliance with OSHA regulations for infection control in the clinical and sterilization areas
  •  Reports to entire department at monthly staff meetings of any updates in infection control, OSHA standards
  •  Undergoes training with Hartford Hospital and Quality Assurance personnel regarding dental department compliance with OSHA regulations and infection control
  •  Maintains close communication with representatives (i.e. Benco, Schein, and cleaning company)
  •  Performs other duties as necessary

  

Qualifications: 

Education: High School Diploma/GED required. Certificate from an accredited Dental Assisting.  Program required. Certificate in Dental Radiology and Infection Control also required.

Experience: Previous Dental Assisting experience preferred. Familiarity with GE Centricty/VisDental system is highly desirable.

Knowledge/Abilities: Excellent technical and interpersonal skills required. Ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds and ability to communicate warmth and confidence to the patient’s population. Interest in preventive dentistry, social consciousness, sensitivity to needs of community residents and the desire to work with and for disadvantaged persons. Excellent computer skills are necessary. GE Centricity/VisDental and/or electronic dental knowledge are highly recommended.
