This is an open position with Toledo Edison, a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp.

Job Summary

Under directive supervision performs construction, maintenance and repair work on de-energized transmission and sub-transmission lines; under close supervision, with a higher classified employee, may work in close proximity of equipment and circuits energized at primary voltages, with the fore-going limits.

Performs duties such as:

  • Installing and removing pole line equipment such as crossarms, racks, brackets, and guys
  • Installing and removing poles, towers, structures, transformers, lightning arresters and associated equipment;
  • Installing and removing conductors; splicing and taping conductors, using connectors and similar devices;
  • Stringing, splicing, sagging and tying in conductors and wires;
  • Operating, under close supervision, energized air switches, dis­connecting switches or other switching devices;
  • Driving and operating Company vehicles, as assigned;
  • Performing servicing operations on vehicles or equipment such as changing tires, installing and removing skid chains, and making minor mechanical adjustments and repairs to keep vehicle or equipment oper­ating in the field; reporting all failures or items requiring atten­tion involving vehicle or equipment;
  • Patrolling transmission lines, as assigned, making visual inspections from the ground, and reporting abnormal conditions;
  • Qualified to perform pole-top, Bucket, Self, Steel Pole/Tower Rescue;
  • Painting towers, structures and other equipment;
  • Clearing limbs of trees from transmission and sub-transmission lines;
  • Reconditioning and salvaging materials and equipment; splicing rope;
  • Driving and operating Company vehicles and equipment; and, as assigned under close supervision Bucket, Crane, Bulldozer, Condor, Go-Track, Backhoe, Diggers and insulator washer;
  • Directing and training employees assigned to the work; and
  • Performing other work, as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Must meet the Company’s requirements as to General Qualifications; and in addition:
  • Must have acquired the equivalent of a senior high school technical course, exclusive of academic subjects, preferably including applied electricity;
  • Must have the physical and mental attributes to climb and work aloft;
  • Must have acquired an elementary knowledge of the safe application, use, and care of hoists, tackles, and tools used in the work;
  • Must understand the fundamental principles of line construction and operation of circuits; must know the identification and use of the material and equipment used in line work;
  • Must be able to work from simple drawings and make simple field sketches;
  • Must have the ability to learn the layout, functions and operation of the electrical equipment and circuit connections of the transmission and sub-transmission systems in the area to which assigned;
  • Must know the principles of operation and the proper application of safety and fire fighting equipment installed on the properties or equipment to which assigned, and the first aid, safety and. resuscita­tion practices as prescribed by the Company; and
  • Must pass motor vehicle operator tests prescribed by the Company and must possess a valid Class A, State of Ohio, Commercial Driver’s License with all necessary endorsements.
