PURPOSE STATEMENT

A nurse extern is a student nurse who assists their preceptor with nursing care to patients assigned to his/her team. The nurse extern is responsible to the preceptor to which he/she is assigned.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Demonstrate positive customer service relations.
  • Implement patient care under the guidance of the preceptor.
  • Assist co-workers as needed/requested, within the scope of the nurse extern.
  • Support the Medical Center’s Mission/Vision/Values positively.
  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance.
  • Perform other essential duties as assigned.

Program Expectations

  • This program will start on June 1, 2026, and conclude on July 25, 2026.
  • Selected students will work 3, 12-hour shifts in their assigned department each week during the 8-week program.

Requirements

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILL REQUIREMENTS

  • Student in good standing of a nationally accredited nursing program with completion of nursing fundamentals course.
  • Must be self-motivated and have the ability to work within the established policies, procedures and practices prescribed by the hospital/clinic.
  • Current BLS required.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be able to sit and stand, intermittent 12 hours a day
  • Must be able to use standard office equipment, including the telephone and computer keyboard
  • Continuously works under pressure of near 100% accuracy while meeting inflexible deadlines
  • Continuously utilizes manual/bi-manual dexterity, near vision, speech, and hearing
  • Frequently stands, walks, sits and utilizes eye/hand coordination and color definition
  • Occasionally reaches above shoulder, regularly required to lift and/or carry up to 40 lbs
  • Occasionally walks on uneven surfaces
