JOB PURPOSE: Under direction, directs the operation of the ice skating rink for the City. Assigns and directs rink staff. Ensures completion of daily duties designed to ensure and maintain a safe and welcoming environment for the rink. Works closely with a third-party management company to ensure safety compliance and training.
Position Duties

- Plans, develops, receives approval, implements, and evaluates the skating rink program for the City.
- Performs facility inspections to include the skating rink, bathrooms, and spectator area to ensure a neat, clean and safe environment at all times.
- Ensures all entrances are clear and safe of debris.
- Light custodial duties, not limited to sweeping, mopping, removing trash, cleaning rink, etc.
- Wipes down furniture, wipes down and disinfects skates.
- Assembles program supplies and equipment.
- Participates in the selection of, and supervision and evaluation of assigned staff.
- Determines and assigns duties and responsibilities to assigned staff.
- Supervises and trains assigned staff.
- Sharpens skates and trains staff on the same.
- Assists with skate rentals.
- Alertly and actively supervises the rink and surrounding areas.
- Immediately intervenes in any emergency or potential hazardous condition and call emergency services when needed.
- Makes up teams, prepares schedules, recruits, coaches, prepares paperwork.
- Approves time cards.
- Orders supplies and staff uniforms.
- Selects contractors engaged in the performance of the ice skating rink for the City.
- Establishes standards and guidelines for their activities.
- Establishes periodic review procedures to assure their work is in conformance with City standards and guidelines.
- Prepares memos, fliers, and a winter calendar and other written materials.
- Recommends, plans, organizes and undertakes changes to grow and improve the program.
- Handles ticket sales.
- Coordinates programs with other City departments and other local agencies.
- Prepares reports on incidents and job injuries.
- Maintains a working liaison with other recreation professionals, City staff and City contractors.
- Performs a variety of other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

- Principles and practices of PC’s and related software.
- Basic principles and practices in supervision of employees.
- Recreation, cultural, and social needs of all age groups.
- Techniques of public relations and advertising.
- Record keeping principles.
- Operation of standard office and specialized department equipment.
- Reading, interpreting, and applying complex written procedures and policies.
- Organizing and maintaining accurate records and files.
- Preparing written reports, correspondence, and other written materials.
- Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
- Communicating with the public and other agencies.
- Excellent customer service.
- Analyzing administrative, operational, and organizational issues, evaluating alternatives, and reaching conclusions.
- Ice Skate.
- Operate a PC and related software.
- Maintain effective working relationships.
- Direct and supervise assigned staff.
- Make effective presentations to the public.
- Read, understand, and apply established program policies, procedures, practices, and regulations.
- Work assigned shifts which include evening and weekend hours.
Other Qualifications
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Any combination of education and experience that demonstrates possession of the requisite knowledge, skill and abilities. A typical way to obtain these would be:
- Bachelor’s Degree with emphasis in sports/recreation administration, business administration or a related field required.
- Master’s Degree in one of the related fields, desirable.
- Two (2) to four (4) years of professional experience in recreation administration, preferred. Masters degree may be substituted for recreation administration experience on a year for year basis to a maximum of two (2) years.
- One (1) to two (2) years of supervision experience, required.
- Experience working an Ice Skating Rink, desirable.
- Proficient using ice skates, required.
- Maintain a valid California Driver License with a driving record acceptable to the City.
