University Chaplain
Description of Position
The University Chaplain at Northwest Nazarene University reports directly to the University President and provides leadership for campus spiritual life through responsibility for all aspects of chapel programming, worship, discipleship, pastoral care, administration, and Christian community building. The Chaplain serves as a member of the Office of University Mission & Ministry, which oversees NNU’s institutional commitment to faith integration throughout everything the University does as well as the University’s connection to local congregations and their pastors.
The University Chaplain is a member of the Senior Leadership Team and has administrative faculty status. This is an exempt, full-time, twelve-month position.
Roles and Responsibilities
Worship and Discipleship – In the areas of worship and discipleship, the University Chaplain will:
- Set the direction of the University Chapel program
- Serve as a key theological voice on campus
- Consider the creation of thematic series that engage other qualified speakers to provide a well-rounded offering
- Encourage each student, faculty member and university staff member to participate regularly in a local church community
- Assist with and contribute to the development of emerging initiatives to effectively minister to the growing online student population through collaboration with University faculty
Leadership and Administration – In the areas of leadership and administration, the University Chaplain will:
- Oversee spiritual formation across campus
- Possess a deep, personal commitment to the Christian faith and to the integration of faith and learning
- Participate, along with appropriate faculty committees and faculty members, in the development of strategies for the integration of faith and learning in all curricular and co-curricular programs, and serve as a resource in this regard to faculty and staff
- Contribute to the health of the spiritual wellbeing of the University employee community as an outgrowth of the University Chaplain’s work
- Oversee and organize the work of two full-time staff persons (Associate Chaplain/Director of Multicultural Engagement & Belonging and Associate Chaplain for Worship Arts) who work alongside the University Chaplain in the work of campus spiritual life.
- Share oversight of a full-time Administrative Assistant who also serves the Congregational Engagement Office.
- Supervise and mentor Student Interns working in the University Chaplain’s Office.
Pastoral Care – In the area of pastoral care, the University Chaplain will:
- Provide pastoral care to the NNU community, collaborating with area clergy in this regard wherever possible with regard to members of the University employee community
- Creatively help students understand themselves in the light of Scripture and the person of Jesus Christ
Christian Community Building & Service – In the areas of Christian community building and service, the University Chaplain will:
- Model a life of Christ-centered service
- Work to develop a variety of settings where students can participate in conversations about their faith journey and the life of Christian discipleship, utilizing resources from the university and the broader Christian community
Essential Functions
- Preaches regularly in Community Chapels, and schedules speakers and programs from both on and off campus.
- Oversees discipleship programs that include residence hall Bible Studies and ministry groups.
- Participates in the selection, training and oversight of the University’s Student Summer Ministry Teams.
- Oversees, plans and implements (with assistance from University Mission & Ministry staff, faculty and Student Life staff) regional and international mission and service-learning trips for students.
- Manages the hiring and supervision of two staff persons who will serve alongside the University Chaplain in the work of campus spiritual life, and supervises the administrative staff in the Office of University Mission & Ministry.
- Oversees the budget for the campus spiritual life aspects of the Office of University Mission & Ministry, with assistance from staff.
- Interfaces with the College of Theology & Christian Ministries Dean and faculty on a regular basis.
- Collaborates with Student Life staff as a pastoral resource in the planning of various programming and events.
- Collaborates with, assists and serves as a resource to the Student Government Association (SGA) Campus Ministry Coordinator regarding the weekly student-led TimeOut, Winter Awakening Chapel Series, and other such ministries.
- Collaborates with Student Life staff in response to student emergencies and crises.
- Chairs the University Spiritual Life Commission.
- Provides pastoral counseling of students who may seek it.
- Collaborates with the Office of Student Life in the planning and promotion of student community service initiatives.
- Works directly with and builds collaborative relationships with Northwest Field Nazarene Youth International (NYI) personnel. This includes event planning and hosting.
- Performs other duties as assigned at the delegation and assignment of the President.
Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
The University Chaplain should bring a wealth of personal and professional experience and ability to the position, and must meet the following minimum qualifications:
- Have earned a Bachelor’s degree in a ministry-related field
- Be an ordained elder, in good standing, in the Church of the Nazarene
- Have pastoral experience in the Church of the Nazarene
- Have prior experience and participation in Nazarene Youth International (NYI), including experience in ministering to young adults
- Possess an understanding of university student development and a commitment to establishing positive relationships with students
- Have experience in administration and teaching
- Possess demonstrated interpersonal and relational gifts, skills, and abilities
- Possess excellent communication skills, both oral and written
- Be committed to the educational mission of Northwest Nazarene University as a Christian liberal arts university in the Wesleyan tradition and as a vital expression of the Church of the Nazarene on the USA Northwest Field
Preferred Qualifications
In addition to the above Minimum Qualifications, preference will be given to candidates possessing the following qualifications:
- Have earned a Master’s degree in a ministry-related field
- Have pastoral experience in the Church of the Nazarene in both a church staff role and as a senior pastor
- Have experience with international travel and relationships with global mission leaders within the Church of the Nazarene and beyond
Compensation
Compensation is set based upon the candidate’s experience, degrees, and preparation. This full-time position includes a benefits package including health, vision and dental insurance for employee and family, annual leave, long-term disability insurance, life insurance, holidays, tuition benefits for employee and dependents, and a retirement program.
