Position Summary
Under the supervision of the designated Supervisor or Manager, carries out the direct therapeutic interaction with clients, in accordance with the Hina Mauka policies and procedures. The therapeutic interaction is designed to bring about the transmittal of education, direction and support to the clients, resulting in an increased level of functioning and an amelioration of the damaging effects of substance abuse/dependence and, for dually diagnosed clients, the damaging effects of serious mental illness. Also shares in the responsibility for the safety and well being of the Hina Mauka clients. Protects the confidentiality of clients and client records in accordance with all applicable federal regulations.
I. Essential Functions
1. Serves as primary counselor for each client assigned to his/her caseload.
2. Evaluate clients in the screening process utilizing a bio-psycho-social screening instrument to determine a client’s need for treatment and level of motivation and makes recommendations for appropriate level of care.
3. Assist with health insurance representatives for approval of care and reimbursement by providing necessary and timely documentation to the utilization counselor.
4. Communicates with referral source regarding prospective client to ascertain treatment history/goals. Coordinates additional requests for payment authorization as necessary.
5. Bases on comprehensive assessment and interpretive summary, develops treatment plans in collaboration with each client and their respective collaborates.
6. Conducts substance abuse, dual diagnosis and recovery-oriented services in a group or individual setting utilizing evidence-based curriculums approved by Hina Mauka.
7. Conduct individual counseling for clients using a cognitive/motivational approach that empower clients to make necessary self-manage changes that support a recovery-oriented lifestyle
8. Maintains client records in accordance with Hina Mauka policies and procedures and in compliance with all state and federal laws, licensing and accreditation standards and contract stipulations.
9. Completes fiscal and statistical reporting tasks as required.
10. Consults and collaborates with the Hina Mauka’s Medical Team Director regarding client psychiatric/medical conditions and need for medical attention.
11. Conducts case management services with internal and external resources in support of client’s overall wellness to include participating in treatment planning conferences with other involved stakeholders.
12. Become acquainted with Hina Mauka General Policies to familiarize yourself with overall clinical operations and practices.
II. Other Functions
1. Performs other related duties as assigned.
2. May be required to transport clients to off-site or outdoor treatment activities.
III. Qualification Requirements
Education/Experience and Training:
1. Certification as a Substance Abuse Counselor (CSAC) or an Advance Degree in
2. Social work, Psychology or Behavioral Science preferred.
3. Experienced working with the behavioral and mental health population preferred
4. Eligible for certification in CPR and First Aid.
5. Valid driver’s license with clean abstract.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
1. Ability to work with and relate to clients with substance abuse disorders, including dually diagnosed and the criminal population.
2. Ability to respond calmly and efficiently to stressful situations with crisis management skills.
3. Well organized and able to maintain accurate and concise records.
4. Able to work with a multidisciplinary team
5. Efficient in Microsoft Programming and familiar with Electronic Health Record systems.
IV. Physical/Mental Demands
Light physical effort (lift/carry up to 10 pounds); occasional standing/walking; occasionally lifts supplies/equipment. May be exposed to infectious and contagious disease. May perform emergency care.
