About the Department

JOB SUMMARY:
Performs a variety of highly complex lead support functions in the monitoring of student activities and behavior on a school campus during class breaks, lunch periods, and before and after school; monitors school grounds, parking lots and building areas.  
 
SUPERVISION:
Receives direct supervision from a site administrator or designee.   
Exercises functional support over employees performing Recreation Aide or Recreation Leader duties.
Exercises no direct supervision.

Position Duties

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Serve in a lead capacity over Recreation Aides or Lead Recreation Aides.
  • Provide supervision to children during non-instructional periods.
  • Supervise students on school campus during class breaks and lunch periods. 
  • Supervise students in the eating areas, including food lines, milk areas, salad bar, and self-service areas.
  • Direct students to proper seating areas, dismiss students to return trays and dispose trash, and dismiss students from eating areas to the playground.
  • Provide functional over the work of Recreation Aides or Lead Recreation Aides.
  • May provide assistance in cleaning eating areas during breakfast, lunch and snack time.
  • Supervise students on school grounds, while exiting, entering, or waiting for the school bus or to be picked up by a parent or guardian.
  • Provide leadership in various recreational activities.
  • May request, issue, and monitor the return of playground and equipment; check equipment for proper care and use.
  • Enforces school rules, safety regulations, positive behavior support systems, and activity rules.
  • Reports potentially dangerous situations.
  • Compiles and keeps accurate written records related to assigned programs or facility.
  • Writing referrals, as needed.
  • Ensures that students do not leave the campus without permission. 
  • Reports unauthorized persons to the site administrator or designee.
  • Monitor various program operations and assist with program planning.
  • Reports unsafe conditions, problems, or situations of a serious nature to site administrator or designee.
  • Visually inspect playground equipment and apparatus; recommend replacement or repair to school site administrator, as needed.
  • Reports instances of accidents to the administrator or designee.
  • Performs first aid and CPR in case of injury, as needed.
  • Performs a variety of clerical duties in support of recreational program activities as assigned by site administrator.
  • Guide Recreation Aides and Recreation Leader's as required by the site administrator or designee.
  • May assist in planning, organizing, and supervising playground or other assigned recreational/sports activities areas. 
  • May supervise student detention and other areas under the guidance of the site administrator.
  • May assist in activity set-ups and take down involving decorating and moving tables, chairs, and equipment for recreational activities.
  • May answer telephone and take messages, make copies, and laminate.  
  • Assist in scheduling and leading a variety of recreation activities.
  • May assist in monitoring the loading and unloading of school buses. 
  • Perform job related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION/TRAINING:
Any combination equivalent to: sufficient training and education needed to acquire the knowledge and abilities listed above.

  •  Graduation from High School is desirable. 
  • Three (3) years of experience as Recreation Aide or Pre-School Recreation Aide with the San Bernardino City Unified School District.
OR
  • One (1) year of experience as Recreation Leader with the San Bernardino City Unified School District.
 
LICENSES/CERTIFICATES/REGISTRATIONS* (At time of appointment and during employment)
  • A current American Red Cross First Aid Certificate or an acceptable equivalent.
  • A current American Red Cross CPR certificate which includes infants, children, and adults or an acceptable equivalent.
* Employees in this classification are responsible for renewing the documents listed to ensure their validity throughout employment in the classification.

ADDITIONAL SALARY INFORMATION: This is a non-exempt position, Regular Classified Salary Range 28A.  Most positions in this class work 2-6hours/9-12months. The probationary period for employees in this classification is six (6) months (or 130 working days of paid service).

THE EXAMINATION:

  • Written Examination. WEIGHT: 100% -OR-

  • Training and Experience Evaluation. WEIGHT: 100%

  • Only qualified candidates will be invited to participate in the examination process.

  • Successful candidates who pass all parts of the examination process will be placed on the eligibility list in order of their relative merit.

  • Candidates will be notified in accordance with the Personnel Commission Rules.

  • This eligibility list will be active for a period of (1) year.
