POSITION PURPOSE

The Manager of Maintenance Technical Training and Development is responsible for overseeing IndyGo’s Maintenance Apprenticeship Program (MAP) and implementing a structured training system. This includes curriculum development, classroom instruction, and practical training designed to equip staff with the technical knowledge required for the safe maintenance, inspection, testing, repair, and operation of IndyGo’s fleet vehicles.

This role collaborates with current and prospective product manufacturers and vendors to integrate product operation, maintenance, and safety requirements into the training curriculum and materials. Additionally, the Manager supports all maintenance divisions by assessing training needs, developing and delivering programs, and maintaining accurate records of employee training activities.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Monitors compliance with maintenance training requirements for high-voltage, electrical, diesel, and diesel-hybrid vehicles and equipment.
  • Works with all Maintenance Managers and Supervisors to develop and conduct relevant training for the department.
  • Provides monthly progress reports and updates on the apprenticeship training to the Maintenance Apprenticeship Program (MAP) Steering Committee.
  • Tracks all training records for both apprentices and other maintenance department employees.
  • Implements and maintains system diagnostic training programs.
  • Identifies and sources appropriate training materials and utilizes all necessary resources to deliver a cost-effective and functional training program.
  • Develops, maintains, and updates original equipment manufacturer (OEM) maintenance training manuals and packages as required.
  • Develops and implements facilitator guides, capability assessments, and workplace competency standards for heavy equipment repair.
  • Analyzes current and future operational requirements to identify training needs and develop corresponding programs.
  • Writes, edits, and produces materials for technical instruction.
  • Develops and facilitates training schedules as outlined in the skills training matrix for all new hires and current employees.
  • Identifies retraining needs and maintains training and competency records within the HR system.
  • Ensures all operating standards and procedures are accurate and effectively communicated to all maintenance employees.
  • Demonstrates strong organizational and project management skills, including the ability to plan, prioritize, and execute multiple initiatives independently while adjusting priorities as needed.
  • Coordinates with internal Learning and Development team members regarding additional employee training needs, including oversight of the Maintenance Apprenticeship Program (MAP).
  • Establishes and manages a department training guide and qualification record system.
  • Monitors equipment failures and corrective actions to identify trends and develop targeted training.
  • Stays current with industry trends in technical developments, training methods, and audiovisual techniques, including maintaining instructional manuals for all vehicle types.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Directly supervise one or more employees.
  • Applies supervisory responsibilities according to organizational policies and applicable laws.
  • Plans, schedules, assigns, and directs work; sets goals for the staff; evaluates and manages employee performance; addresses complaints and resolves employee issues. 

 

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

To perform this job successfully, a team member must have the following education and/or experience. 

  • Bachelor’s degree in automotive technology, a related technical field, or business administration is preferred; an equivalent combination of secondary education and four (4) years of relevant experience may be considered. 
  • Minimum three (3) years of progressive supervisory or management experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • Experience in bus or commercial fleet maintenance and curriculum development is preferred.
  • At least three (3) years of relevant work experience in the public transit or a related industry is preferred.
  • Valid Indiana Driver’s License required.  

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Proficiency in operating office productivity machinery such as a computer, calculator, copy machines, fax machines, and phones. 
  • Knowledge of engines, automatic transmissions, differentials, and other components used in the heavy vehicle and transit maintenance industry is preferred. 
  • Advanced Certificate in Heavy Equipment Repair from a recognized institution is preferred. 
  • Works collaboratively with managers and supervisors to develop and support the Maintenance Apprenticeship Program (MAP). 
  • Proven ability to communicate information and ideas effectively to team members and groups so others will understand. Must be able to exchange accurate information.
  • Ability to provide instruction to adult learners as needed.
  • Ability to read and write in English to perform essential job functions such as preparing training materials, communicating with team members, vendors, and training participants.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively to achieve outcomes. 
  • Above average mathematical abilities such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, ratios, and fractions and the ability to apply principles of algebra and geometry. 
  • Ability to prioritize, classify, and manage tasks and time effectively.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Ability to identify and distinguish colors for the purpose of recognizing color-coded equipment to ensure safety, such as high-voltage wiring.
  • Ability to judge distances and spatial relationships accurately for the purpose of compliance and safety regulations, such as ensuring work areas are properly spaced to prevent accidents. 
  • Ability to observe details at close range (within a few feet of the observer). 
  • Position requires a team member to raise, lower, and transport objects weighing up to fifty (50) pounds. 
  • Requires some exposure to excessive noise, extreme temperatures, fumes/odors, some hazardous materials, and dirt/dust. 
  • Some travel is required.
