Description
Legacy Seeds is one of three private alfalfa breeding programs left in the US! This Research Internship provides a unique opportunity for a highly motivated and detail-oriented person wanting an insight into working in agricultural R&D. This will be a summer position based at the Legacy Seeds Research & Learning Center (RLC) in Waupaca, WI with occasional travel around Wisconsin.
The intern will assist the Alfalfa Research Team in developing new and improved alfalfa varieties by conducting various field and research activities. The daily tasks change with the seasons and will depend on the candidate’s specific strengths and interests; from disease screening in the greenhouses, to driving tractors and collecting data out in the field, to pulling weeds and mowing the lawn. This is a paid internship ranging from $15 to $20 per hour. Credit and independent projects available depending on candidate needs/interests.
Duties and responsibilities
- Assist in organizing, establishing, maintaining, and evaluating field research plots across WI
- Assist in the upkeep of the RLC building and grounds.
- Aid in planning and hosting customer plot tours at the RLC
- Compile observation data using Microsoft 365 programs
- Safely operate equipment and tools
- Give and receive feedback to collaborate with the team
- Must be able to adapt to changing work environments
- Winter hours could also be offered to help with greenhouse and plant breeding tasks upon candidate availability
Requirements
- Pursuing an associate’s or bachelor’s degree, preferably in plant biology, agronomy, agricultural business, or related field of study
- Must hold a valid driver’s license or be able to attain one, and have a good driving record
- All applicants must be eligible to work in the U.S. and be 18 years of age
- Flexible hours and/or extended hours may be required
- Ability to move, lift, and carry boxes, tubs, and tools weighing 50-60 lbs. across uneven ground
- Strong communication, leadership, and time-management skills
- Attention to detail and ability to work without supervision
