Parish: St. Monica Catholic Church
Position Type: Part-time / Weekend On-Site (4-5 hours / Masses a week)
Reports To: Music & Liturgy Leader and Parish Bookkeeper
Position Summary:
The Sound Technician ensures reverent, reliable audio support for all weekend liturgies and related parish events. The technician sets up, operates, troubleshoots, and tears down sound equipment, coordinating closely with music leaders and clergy. Typical services use 6–9 microphones per Mass.
Essential Job duties:
Set-Up (each service):
- Arrange and test all microphones (typically 6–9) and music stands per ensemble needs.
- Match XLR cable flag numbers to snake inputs; confirm each channel passes signal.
- Verify every stand has a standard mic clip; install missing clips as needed.
- Power on/initialize the mixer; confirm input levels and basic EQ are appropriate.
Operation:
- Provide on-call support during each Mass (muting/unmuting, quick gain trims, basic troubleshooting).
- Respond promptly and discreetly to music leader or presider requests.
Troubleshooting & Repairs:
- Isolate faulty lines (swap cable, mic, or input); label and pull defective items from service.
- Place bad cables in work sacristy cabinet, record cable number.
- Label any replacement cables with temporary flags (masking tape/marker) on both ends.
Teardown & Reset:
- Return microphones, stands, clips, and cables to designated storage.
- Coil mic cables neatly on the reel; restore standard “starting layout” for the next group.
- After the final Sunday Mass, confirm all 11 microphones are in the mic case.
- Confirm completion and report any issues.
Requirements
Qualifications
- Organized, punctual, and attentive to detail in a church environment.
- Comfort with basic audio signal flow (mic, cable, snake & mixer) preferred; training provided.
- Able to lift and carry up to 30 lbs and move stands/cables safely.
- Courteous, discreet, and collaborative; maintains a prayerful atmosphere.
Conduct & Safety
- Maintain a reverent presence in worship spaces; dress modestly and move quietly.
- Cable safely (no trip hazards); keep aisles and fire exits clear.
- Power down equipment properly; never force connectors or overtighten clips.
