About the Role:

The Sanitarian plays a critical role in protecting public health by ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations in various environments such as food establishments, public facilities, and residential areas. This position involves conducting thorough inspections, identifying potential health hazards, and recommending corrective actions to prevent disease and promote sanitary conditions. The Sanitarian collaborates with local health departments, businesses, and the community to enforce health codes and educate stakeholders on best practices. By systematically monitoring and evaluating environmental factors, the Sanitarian helps reduce the risk of illness and contamination. Ultimately, this role contributes to the overall well-being of the community by maintaining safe and healthy living and working conditions.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health, Public Health, Biology, or a related field.
  • Certification as a Registered Sanitarian (RS) or equivalent credential as required by the state or local jurisdiction.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local health and sanitation regulations.
  • Experience conducting health and safety inspections or environmental health assessments.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Environmental Health, Public Health, Biology, or a related field.
  • Advanced certification such as Certified Professional - Food Safety (CP-FS) or Certified Environmental Health Specialist (CEHS).
  • Experience working within a governmental health department or regulatory agency.
  • Familiarity with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for mapping and tracking inspection data.
  • Training in epidemiology or infectious disease control.
  • Bilingual abilities to effectively communicate with diverse populations.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct routine and complaint-based inspections of food service establishments, public swimming pools, housing, and other facilities to ensure compliance with health and sanitation regulations.
  • Identify potential health hazards and environmental risks, documenting findings and recommending corrective measures to facility owners or operators.
  • Investigate complaints related to sanitation, food safety, and environmental health concerns, and take appropriate enforcement actions when necessary.
  • Collaborate with local health officials, business owners, and the public to provide education and guidance on health codes and best practices.
  • Prepare detailed inspection reports, maintain accurate records, and assist in the development and implementation of public health policies and programs.
