Union Mutual Insurance Company is currently recruiting for the right candidate to join our Company as a Personal Lines Underwriter. The Company will consider remote or hybrid work arrangements, but some travel to the Company’s Montpelier, VT office will be required.

Summary:
The Personal Lines Underwriter is accountable for developing and growing a profitable portfolio of business based on Union Mutual’s business strategies and objectives. This is accomplished through the marketing of Union Mutual products to a network of independent agents with whom long-term relationships are developed and maintained.
Essential Functions:
- Market Union Mutual products to a network of independent agents in an assigned territory to sustain a stream of desirable new business opportunities and a stable portfolio of existing customers
- Develop and grow a profitable book of business through the application of sound underwriting principles and creative use of underwriting resources to effectively analyze and select risk.
- Successfully retain an existing book of business through an understanding of risk and our ability to deliver innovative underwriting solutions that add value to our customer’s business.
- Provide responsive service to our customer base that leverages our strengths as a competitive differential in the marketplace.
- Communicate directly with agency personnel, either in person, telephone, email or other written correspondence to obtain information for quotes, giving quotes, providing a wide variety of information related to policies, investigating and resolving problems.
- Work closely with Marketing to resolve issues, answer questions, and provide service to the independent agents. Collaborate with Marketing regarding Agency Management activities.
- Participate in general departmental planning efforts related to assessing and improving the effectiveness of existing operating policies, procedures and guidelines.
- Assist, as needed, in the training of new Underwriting employees. Assist staff with difficult or unusual problems or tasks.
- Travel, either alone or with others, to meet with assigned agents, attends conferences, or educational seminars.
Education & Experience:
- Bachelor's degree (B.A.) from a college or university in an appropriate discipline is desirable.
- Entry level Underwriters will have prior administrative and office related experience.
- Experienced Underwriters will have three to five years related underwriting experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired.
- Valid driver’s license required with an acceptable motor vehicle report per Company standards
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Working knowledge of the insurance business including understanding risk identification and assessment, property / casualty insurance coverage, forms, financial statements and business computer applications.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills and excellent organizational skills
- Detail-oriented with strong problem-solving abilities and human relations skills
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively
