About the Department
Brunswick County is looking for a Chief Utility Plant Operator to join our Public Utilities Department at the Northeast Brunswick Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant, located at 10480 Royster Road in Leland, NC. The Chief Utility Plant Operator oversees the daily operation and maintenance of the wastewater treatment facility and associated effluent water systems, and ensures all processes operate safely, efficiently, and in compliance with local, state, and federal permits Work includes:
- Monitoring and controlling plant processes through SCADA and field inspections.
- Supervising and training plant staff.
- Conducting process control testing.
- Maintaining detailed operational records.
- Coordinating maintenance activities.
- Assisting with budget development, procurement, and project coordination.
The Chief Utility Plant Operator must exercise initiative and independent judgment in completing assignments, and will also be required to serve as Operator in Responsible Charge (ORC) for the NW Brunswick Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant. This position will be placed on a rotating on-call schedule which may require a response to after-hour emergencies as needed. This position is considered an ESSENTIAL Employee position under County Policy, and employee will be required to work when County offices are closed due to inclement weather conditions and/or a State of Emergency.
Minimum Qualifications
Vocational/Technical school diploma and three (3) to five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in wastewater treatment plant operation; OR any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities.
- A valid North Carolina or South Carolina Driver’s License is required.
- Current North Carolina Grade IV Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certification is required.
- Supervisory and/or other leadership/staff development experience is highly desirable.
Knowledge of advanced wastewater treatment processes and process optimization techniques. and experience with SCADA systems and computerized maintenance management systems a plus.
Physical Requirements
Must be physically able to operate a variety of wastewater plant machinery and office equipment including various wastewater pumps, chlorinators, mixers, computers, two-way radios, etc. Must also be physically able to operate a motor vehicle. Must be able to exert up to 110 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 5 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Must be able to walk, stand, stoop, bend, climb, and reach.
