Job Description: Part-Time Evening Position (8 hours /week, 2 evenings)
(Program runs September - June)
Key Responsibilities
● Teach in a dynamic, community-oriented non-profit program five hours each week with four additional hours of prep time
● Use the customized Spanish curriculum to tackle the participants' specific challenges to help build a strong literacy foundation. Key components include:
o Alphabet Mastery: Focusing on phonetics, pronunciation, and essential grammatical principles, such as articles, gender, and plural forms.
o Vocabulary Development: Introducing commonly used words and phrases, including greetings, family terms, professions, and everyday objects.
o Elementary Reading and Writing: Using beginner-friendly texts, such as short sentences, poems, and stories, paired with basic writing exercises to enhance literacy skills.
● Track student progress, focusing on engagement
● Provide resource and referral information to students
● Work with other program staff on continuously improving the quality of class instruction and program administration
● Assist with retention of students by forwarding student attendance information to Program Director and Administrative Assistant for follow-up with students
● Participate in professional development activities, including observations, staff meetings, and workshops.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
Requirements:
● Native Spanish speaker
● B.A. or related experience preferred
● Prior teaching experience with adults
● Strong communication skills
● Ability to work cooperatively with others
● Energy and enthusiasm
● Understanding of the immigrant population
● Awareness of local community resources
