General Statement of Duties: Works independently in the construction, installation, repair and maintenance of cemetery grounds and facilities; operates and maintains construction equipment. Supervision Received: Receives general supervision from the Cemetery Superintendent. Reports tasks accomplished verbally to Superintendent. Supervision Exercised: Fills in as Cemetery Superintendent in his/her absence. Essential Job Functions: Performs manual work in the removal of trees, leaves, brush, trash or refuse, and in the installation or replacement of benches, fences, posts, rails, signs or cemetery equipment; participates in the preparation of vehicles and equipment, loading of materials and positioning of equipment as needed; services vehicles and equipment with fuel, lubricants and accessories; carries out work according to standard procedures; utilizes both hand tools and power equipment to perform landscaping and complete assigned tasks; assists in repairs of buildings including, but not limited to rough carpentry, painting and minor plumbing; repairs irrigation equipment; cleans and maintains equipment; follows standard safety procedures and regulations; performs office work when interacting with customers and clients regarding scheduling interments, lot sales, and answering phone calls in absence of Superintendent; regular and punctual attendance. Other Job Functions: Performs lead work in summer; operates spraying equipment; participates in departmental snow removal. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Some knowledge and experience in a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled manual maintenance and construction tasks; knowledge of operation of light equipment including backhoes, compressors, small graders and snow removal equipment; ability to perform repairs and preventative maintenance on all machines in this category; familiarity with the operation of and ability to operate mechanical heavy equipment; familiarity in semi-skilled tasks of carpentry, painting and minor plumbing repairs; ability to maintain turf; Critical thinking skills with the ability to draw conclusions or approaches to problems to implement solutions. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions in oral, written or diagrammatic form, such as maps and blueprints; willingness and ability to perform heavy manual work for an extended period under varying climatic conditions, knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions. Ability to work independently. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees; demonstrate ability to communicate with the public with professionalism and sensitivity, especially during times of grief. Maintain neat attire during funerals. Thoroughness and dependability in performing assignments expected. Experience & Training: High school diploma or completion of high school equivalency diploma (GED) with three (3) years of full-time maintenance experience, including experience in safe operation of trucks and light equipment. Landscaping experience preferred. Must possess a valid Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.
