About the Department
An employee in this position performs unskilled grounds maintenance and custodial work involving a variety of building and parks maintenance tasks assuring facilities are landscaped and maintained. This includes general landscape maintenance such as mowing grass, weed eating, edging, pruning, planting trees and shrubs, fertilizing and general clean-up activities and custodial tasks.
Hiring Range: $36,697.00
Position Duties
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION:
- Mows lawns; trims and edges around walkways, flower beds and fences; operates and maintains lawn mowers and some power and hand tools; cleans parking lots and walkways.
- Picks up trash and debris and hauls to appropriate area and /or receptacle.
- Plants trees, bushes, shrubs, flowers, grasses and other plants; seeds and sods athletic fields and other grounds.
- Maintains, by way of pruning, weeding, irrigating and cutting, etc.: trees, bushes, shrubs, grasses and other plants.
- Performs a variety of custodial tasks including sweeping, mopping, sanitizing, and emptying trash receptacles.
- Operates light to medium sized motorized equipment; operates tractor.
- Makes minor repairs and performs preventive maintenance to motorized equipment.
- Must be able to drive and operate a vehicle to travel as needed.
- Operates a variety of hand and specialty tools associated with the landscaping trade fields, fence repair and other minor repairs.
- Drags and marks ball fields and levels dirt infields and base lines; operates mower with drag attachments and operates lining machines.
- Performs maintenance of park trails.
- Sprays pesticides and chemicals under direction and guidance of a certified applicator.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK:
- High school diploma or equivalent;
- One (1) year of related experience;
- Or equivalent education and/or experience.
- Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license.
- Ability to obtain an NC Pesticide License within 2 years of employment.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of the standard methods, materials, and equipment utilized in the maintenance and cleaning of parks and county facilities.
- Knowledge of standard hand tools, operation of light equipment, and materials used in assigned work.
- Knowledge of custodial practices, supplies, and equipment.
- Knowledge of safety regulations, occupational hazards and related safety precautions in the work.
- Knowledge of painting trade skills.
- Skill in the operation of assigned equipment and tools, tractor, riding mowers, drag and line attachments, chain saws, etc.
- Skill in the use and care of tools.
- Ability to maintain records of work activities.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instruction.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, and County clients, and the general public.
Other Qualifications
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Must be able to perform heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently; and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. The work also involves the physical abilities of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, and hearing. An incumbent must also possess the visual acuity to operate machines such as drills, power saws, to perform skilled trade tasks on non-repetitive nature, and to keep and maintain various records.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The employee is subjected to inside and outside environmental hazards including exposures to noise, vibrations, proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, working in high places, exposure to chemicals, fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, and oils. Duties may result in exposure to human body fluids and thus the work is subject to OSHA standards on blood borne pathogens.
