Under supervision, performs a variety of routine manual tasks in Public Works such as road maintenance, drainage maintenance, and construction; operates light trucks and other simple mechanical equipment.

The current position is for the Drainage Maintenace crew that maintains Gilsizer, Live Oak Canal, and other drainage infrastructure across Sutter County. Duties include applying herbicides for vegetation control, trimming trees, mowing, and removing debris from stormwater structures to ensure proper functionality. 

The Public Works Maintenance Worker I classification is the first journey level of the Public Works Maintenance Worker class series. The equipment operated by an employee in this class is identified by the relatively simple manipulation necessary for such operation. Although the operator usually works under supervision, the proper operation of the equipment is their responsibility. Normally, the equipment is used for tasks, which are largely repetitious in nature.  Incumbents of this class operate some of the equipment used by Public Works Maintenance Worker II, but the work involves less responsibility. Such operation occurs only on a temporary, emergency, training or relief basis.
 
Employees in the Public Works Maintenance Worker II classification operate power equipment which requires skill in manipulation of steering and control mechanisms, such as bulldozers, graders, backhoes, 18-wheeler, low-boy, ten-wheel trucks and front-end loaders, doing such work as clearing brush, rights-of-way and cut and fill work. Incumbents of this class operate some of the equipment used by Public Works Equipment Operator, but the work involves less skill, is operated less frequently.

Salary: $22.49 - $31.03 Hourly; $46,779.20 - $64,542.40 Annually

Position Duties

The following duties are normal for this position.  These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive.  Other related duties may be required and assigned.

Public Works Maintenance Worker I

  1. Operates assorted machinery including mower, crack sealer, roller, weed eater, power broom, welder, cutting torch, drill press, chain saw, jackhammer, sprayer, sandblaster, and others in the construction, maintenance, and repair of County roads, County drainage, culverts, and other infrastructure.
  2. Apply Herbicides in the maintenance of the County roads and drainage infrastructure.
  3. Transports materials and equipment to job site.
  4. Clears right-of-ways of debris, trees, and trash.
  5. Installs, maintains, and repairs traffic control devices such as road markings and signs.
  6. Maintains shoulders and medians of roadways by mowing grass and removing debris.
  7. Digs, widens, and backfills trenches and other excavations.
  8. Redirects and controls traffic around work site to ensure safety for the public and for workers.
  9. Performs minor routine maintenance and field adjustments on equipment such as checking oil and fluid levels, checking tire pressure, and checking belts.
  10. Fabricates concrete forms and pours concrete; shovels and rakes asphalt.
  11. Prepares a variety of documentation and reports, including inventory work sheets, daily logs, and gas usage records.
  12. Performs other related tasks such as filling sandbags to control flooding, chipping trees, sweeping, flushing culvert pipes, and building wooden deck bridges.

  EXAMPLES OF MARGINAL DUTIES:

  1. Sweeps gravel and debris on roadways.
  2. Performs minor maintenance on equipment.

Public Works Maintenance Worker II:

  1. Operates assorted machinery including trucks and trailers, front-end loaders, backhoe, rollers, crack sealer, paint truck, and others in the construction, maintenance, and repair of County roads, County drainage, culverts, and other infrastructure.
  2. Apply Herbicides in the maintenance of the County roads and drainage infrastructure.
  3. Transports materials and equipment to job site.
  4. Clears right-of-ways of debris, trees, and trash.
  5. Installs, maintains, and repairs traffic control devices such as road markings and signs; assists in bridge maintenance.
  6. Clears slides and brush, gutters, curbs, culverts, catch basins, and other drainage structures.
  7. Prepares various oil, dirt, sand, and gravel mixes for road work; spreads surfacing materials and finishes road surface and shoulders.
  8. Performs minor routine maintenance and field adjustments on equipment such as checking oil and fluid levels, checking tire pressure, and checking belts.
  9. Performs other related tasks such as filling sandbags to control flooding, chipping trees, sweeping, flushing culvert pipes, and building wooden deck bridges.
  10. May maintain simple operating records as assigned.
  EXAMPLES OF MARGINAL DUTIES:

  1. Street related work such as patching potholes, flagging, sweeping, and tree trimming.
  2. Repairing road signs, drainage signs or markings.

Minimum Qualifications

The following are the minimum qualifications for this position.  Possession of these qualifications does not ensure that an applicant will be interviewed.  Applications will be reviewed in comparison with all other applications received. 

Public Works Maintenance Worker I
Knowledge of:  The provisions of the California Vehicle Code pertaining to truck operation on streets and highways; general operation of automotive equipment such as light trucks, and basic use of hand tools and mechanical tools. 
 
Ability to:  Read and write; follow written and verbal instructions; operate vehicles; learn to operate a variety of power equipment and perform light and heavy manual work. 
 
Education and Experience:  Equivalent to one year of general maintenance and construction work, or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities. 

Public Works Maintenance Worker II
Knowledge of:  Operation and routine maintenance of power equipment, including loaders, trucks, rollers, dozers, compressors, plows and related equipment; tools, methods, and materials used in road construction and maintenance; provisions of the California Vehicle Code pertaining to light and moderately heavy equipment operation on streets and highways.
 
Ability to:  Read and write and follow written and verbal instructions; operate a variety of power-driven equipment; make minor repairs and provide minor service on vehicles; work cooperatively with others and perform light and heavy manual work.
 
Education and Experience:  Equivalent to two years of experience as a Public Works Maintenance Worker I or three years of general maintenance and construction work operating similar equipment as described, or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities. 

Other Qualifications

Essential Duties require the following physical skills and work requirements:
Requires the ability to exert a considerable amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects and to stoop, crouch, climb and lift in performance of manual labor; operate a variety of tools, equipment and vehicles used in performance of daily tasks; ability to work around electrical currents and/or hazardous materials in a safe manner; may be subject to uncomfortable working conditions including exposure to dust, noise, heat or cold.

License or Certificate

Public Works Maintenance Worker I:
Must possess or obtain a California Commercial driver’s license (CDL), with appropriate endorsements, within twelve months of the date of hire.  Minimum of a Class B, Class A is preferred. 

Must maintain a driving record that will meet commercial insurance requirements. 

Must possess and maintain an appropriate, valid driver’s license while employed.

Public Works Maintenance Worker II:
Must possess and maintain a valid California Class A Driver's License.

Must maintain a driving record that will meet commercial insurance requirements.
