About the Department

Perform journeyman-level welding, fabrication, and mechanical work in the repair, maintenance, and rebuilding of City-owned vehicles and equipment.

Position Duties

1. Perform acetylene or electric arc welding/cutting processes, including oxygen/acetylene, manual arc, metallic inert gas, and brazing on various metals and materials.

2. Perform scheduled and unscheduled repairs and inspections on automotive and heavy gasoline and diesel equipment, including automobiles, trucks, tractors, rollers, sweepers, snowblowers, loaders, blades, bulldozers, scrapers, seeders, mowers, trailers, and other light and heavy construction equipment. This may include adjusting, diagnosing, and repairing and/or replacing hydraulics, fuel systems, brakes, drivetrains, transmissions, cooling and heating systems, body and chassis, steering systems, electrical systems, exhaust systems, conveyors, wheels, axles, tires, suspension systems, computer and sensor systems, etc.

3. Design, weld, adapt, fabricate, and rebuild specialized equipment and tools; modify and redesign existing equipment; and repair and maintain stationary mechanical equipment.

4. Operate and maintain equipment used in welding and metal fabrication, including band saws, grinders, lathes, brakes, shears, drill press, chop saw, iron worker, etc.

5. Perform welding and general repairs on a variety of heavy and light gas and diesel equipment.

6. Plan, lay out, and manage projects; prepare and maintain accurate records and adhere to all appropriate safety regulations and practices.

7. Perform field repair and replacement work on specialized equipment.

8. Perform snow and ice control and removal procedures, including plowing, sanding, spreading deicing chemicals, loading trucks, hauling snow, shoveling sidewalks, or assisting mechanics in the maintenance of snow removal equipment.

9. Convert raw materials into finished product.

10. Maintain daily records of parts, labor, and materials used in, and repairs made to, vehicles and equipment. Maintain welding shop equipment, tools, and service vehicles to ensure functional readiness and safety.

11. Perform other such duties and functions as are necessary or incidental to the proper performance of this position.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from high school or GED certification with completion of a program in welding from a vocational/technical school and a minimum of three (3) years’ experience as a welder; or any such combination of education, experience, and training as may be acceptable to the hiring authority.

American Welding Society GMAW D1.1 certification is desired.

Willing to work weekends, holidays, nights, and extended hours in emergencies at times under adverse weather conditions.

Must possess hand tools up to 1 inch in size suitable for repair of light and heavy automotive and construction equipment.

Must possess or be able to obtain within 90 days of hire a valid Class B commercial driver’s license with tanker endorsement.

Other Qualifications

  • Knowledge of the practices, materials, methods, and tools of the welding trade.

  • Basic knowledge of personal computers and Microsoft Windows.

  • Knowledge of the properties of a variety of metals related to welding.

  • Skill in the use of tools, equipment, and machines used in maintaining and repairing automotive and heavy equipment.

  • Knowledge of the hazards and rules of safe operation and precautions to be taken to avoid accidents when using welding equipment.

  • Knowledge in the safe operation of light and heavy automotive and construction equipment.

  • Ability to perform some heavy manual tasks as well as the ability to perform some heavy lifting.
