Structural Superintendent
The Structural Superintendent is responsible for the direct, day-to-day supervision of all structural construction activities on site, with a strong emphasis on structural steel erection and coordination. This role ensures crews and subcontractors perform safely, efficiently, and in compliance with drawings, specifications, and industry standards. The Structural Superintendent works hands-on in the field—planning and sequencing work, coordinating crane operations, overseeing steel erection, and ensuring quality throughout the structural phase of the project.
Job Duties & Responsibilities
- Lead and supervise structural steel erection including unloading, rigging, hoisting, bolting, welding, decking, and alignment.
- Coordinate with foremen and subcontractors to sequence structural steel work, concrete placement, and precast installation when applicable.
- Enforce strict safety standards in accordance with OSHA requirements, with emphasis on fall protection, rigging, lifting, and crane operations.
- Review and interpret structural drawings, steel shop drawings, and erection plans to ensure accuracy in the field.
- Schedule and oversee crane picks, steel deliveries, and material staging to maximize efficiency and minimize downtime.
- Inspect structural steel work daily for quality—bolting, welding, fit-up, alignment—in accordance with AISC standards and project specifications.
- Maintain and update short-interval schedules to keep critical path structural work on track.
- Manage the permit and inspection process for structural steel, coordinating with engineers, inspectors, and testing agencies.
- Resolve field issues quickly to avoid schedule delays and cost impacts.
- Complete daily reports, track labor hours, and maintain inspection and testing documentation.
- Lead pre-task planning meetings and toolbox talks to reinforce safety and productivity.
Requirements
- Strong leadership skills with proven ability to manage steel erection crews and subcontractors.
- Extensive hands-on experience in structural steel erection: rigging, bolting, welding, decking, and alignment.
- Knowledge of OSHA Subpart R (Steel Erection) and other relevant construction safety requirements.
- OSHA 10 certification required (OSHA 30 preferred).
- Ability to read and interpret structural drawings, steel shop drawings, and erection details.
- Thorough understanding of AISC standards and industry best practices for steel erection.
- Scheduling and sequencing expertise for structural activities, with emphasis on crane and rigging operations.
Qualifications and Experience
- Minimum 5 years’ experience as a superintendent with at least 15 years in structural construction, with significant emphasis on steel erection.
- Experience with commercial, industrial, or infrastructure projects involving major structural steel scopes.
- Strong background in coordinating inspections, testing, and QA/QC for steel work.
- Excellent communication skills for coordinating between field crews, inspectors, engineers, and project managers.
- Willingness to travel or relocate as required by projects.
