Current Assignment
BART is seeking a motivated, forward-thinking Engineer to join our Track Department. This role offers an exciting opportunity to support and shape the reliability, safety, and efficiency of one of the nation’s leading transit systems serving the entire San Francisco Bay Area.
The selected Engineer will play a key role in the planning, design, inspection, and maintenance oversight of BART’s track infrastructure. Working alongside experienced engineers, project managers, and operations staff, you will ensure that our rail system meets the highest standards of safety, operational performance, and sustainability.
Current Operational Priorities
As BART continues to expand and modernize, the Track Department is focusing on several key priorities:
- Track Rehabilitation & Replacement Projects: Supporting major capital improvement programs to replace aging track components and enhance ride quality.
- Safety and Compliance: Ensuring all track assets meet federal, state, and internal safety standards through inspections, testing, and preventative maintenance programs.
- Innovation & Technology Integration: Implementing modern engineering solutions, including advanced materials, monitoring systems, and predictive maintenance tools.
- Sustainability Initiatives: Supporting environmentally conscious design practices that reduce energy use, minimize waste, and extend asset life cycles.
- System Expansion & Upgrades: Contributing to design reviews, feasibility studies, and construction oversight for new track segments and system upgrades.
Role Responsibilities
- Develop and review engineering designs, calculations, and specifications for track-related projects.
- Support capital improvement programs, project scheduling, and budget planning.
- Perform field inspections and evaluations of track systems and components.
- Provide technical support for operations, maintenance, and emergency response efforts.
- Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure project success and compliance with safety and engineering standards.
This position involves work in active railroad environments, including tunnels, aerial structures, and construction zones. Candidates must be able to maintain the physical condition necessary to safely perform fieldwork in and around active train operations. This includes working near live electrical equipment, in confined spaces such as tunnels, and in occasionally noisy, dirty, or inclement conditions. This role requires the ability to climb ladders and stairs, and to navigate uneven surfaces such as railway ballast, construction areas, and both elevated and underground structures. Candidates must also be willing to work night shifts (up to five nights per week), weekends, and overtime as needed to support operational demands and emergency response efforts.
The most qualified candidates for this position will have highly developed competencies in the following areas, which are demonstrated and reinforced with related work experience and will be clearly articulated during the selection process:
- Strong Engineering skills and experience, problem-solving ability, and communication skills, including the ability to make clear presentations, produce concise technical reports, and translate technical issues to business and operational perspectives.
- Perform a variety of calculation, data analysis, and trackway feature database management, asset condition trending using Microsoft Excel and other programming languages, including using third-party operational software and troubleshooting using diagnostic features.
- Utilize various track measurement system and software to identify track conditions, develop defect reports, and recommend mitigations.
- Utilize a variety of engineering computer programs and applications including CADD.
- Interpret manuals, diagrams and schematics; troubleshoot, maintain and repair real-time computers and peripheral equipment.

Position Duties
- Performs a variety of professional engineering duties related to the subject department. Duties may include preparing engineering specifications, preliminary cost estimates, engineering drawings, sketches, calculations and analyses.
- Prepares engineering designs, specifications, costs and quantity estimates for engineering construction projects; prepares and/or reviews the adequacy and accuracy of computations.
- Assists in the establishment of schedules and methods for providing engineering project oversight services; responsible for the verification of quantities of materials and adherence to specifications; may recommend resources to be allocated.
- Monitors work activities to ensure compliance with established policies and procedures; evaluates proposed changes to approved plans and specifications.
- Recommends approval of and submits contractor’s progress payment applications; performs audits of contractor and suppliers to ensure adherence to established policies procedures.
- Prepares a variety of reports and correspondence on project matters including Inspector’s Daily Reports, monthly and final completion reports, contract modifications negotiations, field and design engineering changes, and correspondence with the contractor on fulfillment of requirements.
- Discusses and coordinates engineering design or construction project activities with design engineering staff and other affected engineering personnel.
- Maintains awareness of progress on assigned engineering design or construction projects to ensure compliance with designated time and cost schedules.
- Provides assistance to inspectors in the interpretation of plans and resolution of problems during construction.
- Reviews construction design plans to evaluate potential construction problems; monitors construction project expenditures.
- Utilizes a variety of engineering programs and application including CADD.
- Attends and participates in professional group meetings; stays abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of engineering design and construction.
- Conducts field inspections; ensures compliance with specifications.
