About the Department

The Concept Forge Technician is a part-time, non-benefited position responsible for supporting hands-on maker activities, equipment use, and safety within the Concept Forge. This role involves assisting students, community members, and industry partners with projects, maintaining a safe and welcoming environment, and coordinating the use of fabrication technologies such as 3D printing, machining, and laser cutting. In addition, the Technician helps organize and deliver community outreach initiatives, including operating the mobile manufacturing trailer for school visits, events, and demonstrations. The position requires strong technical aptitude, communication skills, and a passion for teaching, tinkering, and engaging the community in manufacturing and maker-centered learning.

Compensation: $30/hr.

Position Duties

Essential Functions: – this position is non-exempt and ieligible for compensatory or overtime pay provisions of the FLSA.  This listing of essential duties is not all-inclusive, but representative, other duties may be assigned).
Makerspace Support and Safety

  • Provide hands-on assistance to students, faculty, industry partners, and community members using makerspace tools and equipment. Ensure proper training, enforce safety protocols, and help maintain a clean, organized, and welcoming work environment.

Equipment Operation and Maintenance
  • Operate, troubleshoot, and perform routine maintenance on fabrication technologies such as 3D printers, desktop CNC machines, and laser cutters. Support users in equipment setup and project execution to ensure efficient and safe operation.
Community Outreach and Mobile Trailer Operations
  • Coordinate and deliver outreach events by transporting and setting up the mobile manufacturing trailer at schools, career fairs, and community events. Represent the Concept Forge through demonstrations, hands-on activities, and engagement with diverse audiences.
Program Support and Collaboration
  • Work with staff, faculty, and external partners to develop and deliver maker-centered programming. Assist with scheduling, event planning, and collaborative initiatives that advance the Concept Forge’s mission.
Other Duties as Assigned
  • Support special projects or additional tasks necessary to ensure smooth operation of the Concept Forge and AMMC initiatives.

Other responsibilities may be assigned based on contemporary institutional needs.



Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associate's degree in a relevant field (design, technology, or a related discipline).
  • At least 1-2 years of experience in a makerspace, workshop, or similar environment.
  • Proficiency with various fabrication tools and technologies (3D printers, CNC machines, electronics).
  • Basic knowledge of design software and digital fabrication techniques.

In lieu of the required degree, candidates with equivalent professional experience, industry certifications, or a combination of education and relevant work experience may be considered. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in K–12 outreach, makerspace instruction, or community education. 
  • Experience maintaining inventories and tracking program metrics.
  • Familiarity with CAD/CAM workflows (Tinker CAD, Fusion 360, CAM software).
