School Adjustment Counselor

DESCRIPTIVE STATEMENT

        OF POSITION:

The School Adjustment Counselor is responsible for implementing the school-wide plan for creating a safe, social-emotional environment for students in order to help them institute positive changes and help them achieve their fullest potential. The School Adjustment Counselor helps with children through individual casework, community resources, consultation with other school staff members and continuous collaboration with parents, teachers, administration, and other non-instructional school staff members.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Licensed School Adjustment Counselor, plus three years of experience working with children and families in an individual or group setting in social services required. Experience working with students with trauma, anxiety and/or oppositional disorders preferred. Good knowledge of school social work theory, practices, and public school environment; ability to apply professional skills to provide wide-range counseling, diagnostic and crisis intervention services at the full-proficiency level for general and special education students at the grade level or special education modality to which assigned; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents and school personnel. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including ability to communicate effectively with students and families of diverse backgrounds. Ability to deescalate highly emotional students and adults. A commitment to the belief that all children can succeed.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES FOR SCHOOL ADJUSTMENT COUNSELOR

  1. Coordinate special programs and events for students related to character development and leadership.
  2. Build and support rapport among staff, families and students.
  3. Effectively apply clinical skills within an educational setting.
  4. Provide school-based individual and small-group counseling support to students with social, emotional and behavioral needs.
  5. Provide conflict resolution support to staff, families and students.
  6. Serve as a member of the school-based crisis team.
  7. Serve as a member of the student support and special education team as needed.
  8. Collaborate with staff to develop IEPs, Section 504 Accommodations Plans, Functional Behavior Assessments, Behavioral Intervention Plans, and Building/Safety Plans.
  9. Provide consultation services to staff, families and students regarding social, emotional, and behavioral concerns.
  10. Collaborate on implementing a school-wide bullying prevention program through classroom instruction.
  11. Provide consultation support regarding the accessibility of community-based medical and mental health services.
  12. Maintain communication with community-based medical and mental health service providers.
  13. Assist with the facilitation of student safety assessments.
  14. Support student transition from mental health facilities/hospitals to school.
  15. Support student transition across grade and academic levels.
  16. Support school-wide initiatives.
  17. Perform other responsibilities as deemed appropriate and assigned by a supervisor and/or designee.
