TxDOT Corpus Christi District is looking for a Roadway Maintenance Section Assistant l, II or III in Corpus Christi, TX. This position helps lead a team of Roadway Maintenance Technicians and Crew Chiefs to make roads safer while gaining additional skills in leadership and roadway maintenance work. Annual Salary Ranges:

Maintenance Section Assistant I   (B19) $48,244- $76,028
Maintenance Section Assistant II  (B20) $51,158- $81,351
Maintenance Section Assistant III (B21) $54,278- $87,046

This position is for one (1) Maintenance Section Assistant I/II/III. Assists a Maintenance Section Supervisor in overseeing work completed by the crews and contractors, which provides a safe driving thoroughfare within a designated geographical area. Leads the work of Transportation Maintenance Crew Chiefs, technical and clerical staff. Work requires responding to emergency notification on an as-needed basis. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Essential Duties:

Maintenance Section Assistant I

  • Ensures all projects follow established safety guidelines.
  • Handles public complaints.
  • Inspects road conditions, work-in-progress and work completed by the crews and contractors.
  • Responsible for operations of section in absence of supervisor.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
     

Additional duties for Maint Section Assistant II 

  • Assists in budget preparation for the section.
  • Assists the maintenance section supervisor in overseeing the work of the section and contracted crews including scheduling equipment, material and personnel necessary for section projects.
  • Assists with planning, coordinating and implementing emergency response to inclement weather, accidents, and hazardous spills affecting area roadways.
  • Leads the work of Transportation Maintenance Crew Chiefs, technical and clerical staff.
  • Maintains records on materials, supplies and personnel.
  • May operate light and heavy roadway equipment.
  • Trains employees on the use of equipment and procedures.

 

Additional duties for Maintenance Section Assistant III

  • Inspects road conditions, work-in-progress and work completed by the crews and contractors.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.

Experience: 

Maintenance Section Assistant I - 5 years*
Maintenance Section Assistant II - 6 years*
Maintenance Section Assistant III - 7 years*
*Experience in roadway maintenance or construction related work. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Must have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with "N" Tank endorsement at time of application.
  • Safety Impact Certificate: Issued at time of hire

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Subject to environmental conditions; protection from weather but not temperature changes

  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour

  • Subject to hazards-moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals

  • Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device

  • Lift up to 50 lbs. at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.

  • Stooping-bending body downward and forward by bending spine at waist

  • Crouching-bending body downward and forward by bending leg(s) and spine

  • Standing-prolonged periods of time

  • Visual Acuity-operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment

  • This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical.
  • Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions. This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing. Please note that the Department of Transportation's Drug and Alcohol Testing Regulation – 49 CFR Part 40, at 40.151(e) – does not authorize “medical marijuana” under a state law to be a valid medical explanation for a positive drug test result for an employee in this position.
  • Required to work weekends and holidays.
  • Required to work hours other than 8 to 5.
  • Required to work under exposure to inclement weather conditions.
  • Required to wear personal protective equipment provided by employer and comply with all safety
  • requirements.
  • Must be able to report for duty within 45 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond to
  • emergency situations.
  • A mathematical simulation will be part of the interview process.
