QUALIFICATIONS
Education
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing – RN/LPN
 
Experience/Skills
- Preferably has at least one to two years’ experience in a clinical setting
 - Acquires Outpatient Surgery education through clinical experience, on-the-job training, inservices, and continuing education
 - Exhibits skills in assessment of patients, preoperative care, and postoperative care
 - Recommended membership in AORN
 - Proficiently reads, writes, and understands English
 - Accurately reads fine print, supply labels, patient identification bracelets, the surgical schedule, and policies and procedures
 - Accurately hears and follows verbal instructions
 - Pushes and pulls heavy objects such as gurneys, patient beds, and OR beds
 - Lifts patients and heavy boxes weighing up to 40 pounds
 
Required Licenses/Certifications
- Registered Nurse licensed to practice in the state of Indiana
 - CPR
 - ACLS
 
Working Conditions
- Works in a well-lit, air-conditioned environment with a temperature of 65ºF-72ºF and humidity of 45%-55%
 - Wears hospital-provided scrub attire while on duty

RN Duties – Assessment/Planning
- Incorporates current clinical knowledge with established nursing practice to perform nursing intervention using the nursing process
 - Applies knowledge of illness, trauma, surgical procedures, and anesthesia practice to the patient process
 - Assesses the patient according to PACU standards and policies and initiates patient care based on the assessment process and the preadmissions process
 - Evaluates the patient response to the care given to monitor the desired outcome
 - Re-evaluates care as changes in patient condition occur
 - Documents and updates assessments, interventions, and patient response to medical and nursing care
 - Demonstrates independent decision-making and effective problem-solving related to patient care issues
 
RN Duties – Communication & Accountability
- Uses all available sources of patient assessment information to ensure accurate data for nursing process
 - Interacts appropriately with the medical staff and peers to benefit patient care
 - Communicates pertinent information to coworkers, peers, and coordinators to facilitate patient care and/or departmental functioning
 - Acts as a resource person regarding patient care and departmental policies and procedures for orientees, students, and other appropriate personnel
 - Communicates with the patient in a way they understand
 - Communicates assessment information with appropriate nursing staff at time of patient discharge
 - Displays accountability by decision-making based on sound nursing judgment
 - Demonstrates accountability for the patient’s right to considerate, private, and respectful care
 
RN Duties – Miscellaneous
- Sets priorities in planning and implementing nursing care using sound nursing judgment
 - Accepts responsibility for completion of patient care assignments
 - Demonstrates ability to perform in a professional manner during crises and emergency situations
 - Uses and supervises the use of supplies and equipment economically
 - Participates in hospital and/or community activities to promote the growth of nursing and patient care
 - Works on nursing department committees
 - Participates in medical and nursing department monitoring, quality assurance, and improvement procedures
