The Head Mechanic / Shop Manager is responsible for overseeing the maintenance, repair, and safe operation of all golf course equipment across three championship-level courses. This includes managing the equipment fleet, maintaining detailed service records, supervising shop staff, and ensuring all machinery is operating at peak performance to support daily golf course operations. This role also plays a key part in fostering a safe, efficient, and team-oriented work environment. 


The anticipated shifts are Monday–Friday, 6:00 AM – 2:30 PM (subject to seasonal adjustments). Occasional weekends or emergency call-ins.


Key Responsibilities: 

Equipment Maintenance & Repair 

  • Inspect, diagnose, and repair mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical issues on all turf equipment and club vehicles, including mowers, tractors, utility vehicles, golf carts, and passenger vans such as Sienna and Sprinter models.
  • Perform routine preventative maintenance on all equipment.
  • Sharpen and adjust cutting units to ensure optimal turf quality.
  • Maintain irrigation pump stations and small engine equipment.
  • Respond to emergency situations as they arise.

Shop Management 

  • Organize and maintain a clean, safe, and efficient shop environment.
  • Manage inventory of parts, tools, and supplies; order as needed.
  • Develop and implement maintenance schedules and logs.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA and environmental regulations.
  • Maintain organization of storage areas.

Team Leadership 

  • Supervise and train assistant mechanics and shop staff.
  • Coordinate with superintendents and assistants to prioritize equipment needs.
  • Foster a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Promote a positive work environment through effective communication and creating a warm and engaging atmosphere.
  • Provide daily support and guidance to mechanical staff, including constructive feedback.
  • Communicate policy changes, announcements, and necessary updates to the team.
  • Lead development and growth of mechanics; identify training and teaching opportunities.
  • Monitor mechanics’ timecards to ensure compliance with posted schedules.
  • Enforce company policies and procedures consistently.

Fleet & Budget Oversight 

  • Maintain accurate records of equipment usage, repairs, costs, and special projects.
  • Track and report on special projects and seasonal equipment needs. 
  • Assist in budgeting for equipment replacement and shop upgrades.
  • Recommend equipment purchases and evaluate vendor proposals.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Grounds and Facilities.

 

Qualifications:  

Required: 

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in golf course equipment maintenance.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience managing others. 
  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • Strong knowledge of turf equipment, hydraulics, diesel/gas engines, and electrical systems.
  • Ability to read technical manuals and schematics.
  • Proficiency with grinding and reel setup.
  • Valid driver’s license.

Preferred:  

  • Certification from GCSAA (Golf Course Superintendents Association of America) or equivalent technical training.
  • Experience managing multiple courses or large fleets.
  • Familiarity with computerized maintenance tracking systems.
  • Bilingual - Spanish speaking is a plus.

 

Skills: 

  • Mechanical Expertise: deep understanding of small engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, and diesel /gas-powered equipment. 
  • Turf Equipment Knowledge: proficiency in maintaining and repairing mowers, tractors, utility vehicles, and irrigation systems. 
  • Preventative Maintenance: ability to develop and execute maintenance schedules to extend equipment life. 
  • Grinding and Reel Setup: skilled in sharpening and adjusting cutting units for optimal turf performance. 
  • Diagnostic Ability: efficient at troubleshooting and resolving mechanical issues quickly.

Safety: 

  • Ensure proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for self and team, including hearing, eye/face, respiratory, hand, and foot protection.
  • Safely operate machinery and equipment in accordance with manufacturer guidelines and club policies.
  • Handle and store chemicals responsibly, following safety data sheets (SDS) and environmental regulations.
  • Promote a safety-first culture through training, supervision, and enforcement of safety protocols.
  • Conduct regular safety briefings and ensure compliance with PPE protocols.

 

Physical Requirements: 

  • Must be able to work in a physically demanding environment. 
  • Ability to perform heavy physical labor, including frequent lifting up to 50 pounds and occasional lifting over 50 pounds.
  • Capable of standing, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, climbing, reaching, pushing, pulling, and grasping for extended periods.
  • Manual dexterity and visual acuity required for detailed mechanical work.
  • Must be able to work indoors and outdoors in varied weather conditions, including extreme heat, humidity, rain, snow, and storms.
  • Flexible to work day or night shifts, weekends, holidays, and occasional long hours as needed.
