The starting annual wage for this position is $51,607 to $60,711, depending on qualifications. The full range is $51,607 to $82,073.
Public Works DepartmentThe Public Works Department consists of four operating Divisions and the Administrative Office. The Divisions include Streets, Sewer, Waste Removal and Fleet Maintenance. The Waste Removal Division performs the weekly curbside collection and disposal of residential household and bulk solid waste, curbside recycling, and brush collection.
Waste Carrier (Waste Removal Division)
This position generally involves day-to-day refuse or recycled materials collection. A person in this position receives general direction from the Solid Waste Collection Supervisor and is responsible for achieving desired results through initiative, independent judgment, and team effort. This position may also be involved in the refuse cart program, collection and handling of recycled materials, and other projects.
Position Duties
- Assists in maintaining clean, sanitary conditions in the community by way of a waste or recycle collection route, including reporting any items not collected.
- Operates a large vehicle during frequent start-stop operations, safely and efficiently.
- Maintains a close daily schedule for refuse or recycle collection.
- Maintains up-to-date records kept within the Waste Removal Division, such as equipment maintenance, route information, refuse cart program requirements and so forth.
- Maintains assigned vehicle and equipment in a safe and efficient operating condition, including greasing and washing.
- Carries and empties heavy refuse receptacles into a vehicle for several hours in all types of weather conditions.
- Is available for emergency work 24 hours a day, on call.
- May be assigned to a reserve refuse/recycle collector position in which a regular route is not assigned. Work involves fill in and office-oriented work or work in the refuse cart program or other areas.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Some skill in operating heavy duty trucks.
- Ability to maintain various records of the Division.
- Physical ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time under varying weather conditions, especially as it relates to the back, legs and arms.
- Must possess or be able to obtain and maintain a valid Illinois class A or B Commercial Driver's License.
Other Qualifications
A high school diploma, GED, or other vocational school certification, supplemented by some experience in manual labor and driving a commercial motor vehicle or any other combination of experience or training which provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities.
