Department: Editorial

Reports to: Executive Producer, US audio and video podcast

Location: New York, New York

Terms and conditions: Full-time, Permanent, News Media Guild

Annual Salary: $160,000 - $190,000

About the role

The Guardian has a robust collection of award-winning podcasts in the UK, but this will be our first show for an American audience. Working closely with the show’s executive producer and deputy EP, the host will be the audience’s main connection with our global roster of reporters, editors, and columnists, as well as any outside guests we feature. You’ll be a key voice in the development of this show as we figure out how to bring the Guardian’s unique voice and global perspective to life.

The ideal host will bring a nimbleness with the news and a deep sense of curiosity about the world, as well as passions you’d like to explore in longform interviews. The show will be run out of our newsroom, but we welcome candidates with strong personalities and points of view they will bring to interviews. Episodes will come out three times a week and be informative and meaningful as well as loose and conversational. We want someone who is comfortable in front of the camera, both in the studio and on social media, who understands that talking about the news requires both urgency and care and a sense of humanity and playfulness. You should be able to write quickly and artfully using that same conversational tone.

Key Responsibilities

  • Host episodes of a video and audio news podcast
  • Carry out long-form daily interviews with Guardian journalists and external contributors
  • Participate in story meetings and pitch ideas for episodes

  • Ensure episodes meet the highest editorial and legal standards
  • Attend and contribute to editorial and planning meetings
  • Work with executive producer and the global head of audio to continue to grow the ambition of the show
  • Establish and maintain relationships with reporters and writers across the Guardian

  • Passion for the podcast medium in both interview and narrative forms
