Failure to submit, may result in your application being disqualified.Under general supervision, the Social Service Aide-BJM provide supervision and care of abandoned, neglected, and abused children in protective custody; workers in this classification possess the general skills necessary for the care of children at the Betty Jo McNeece Receiving Home (BJMRH); assists Social Workers by performing specifically designated tasks related to the improvement of family functioning, child care and child welfare services; and performs related work as required.
Social Service Aide-BJMRH is a single position paraprofessional class. Incumbents assist Social Workers by relieving them of routine tasks such performing various tasks for Child Welfare Services and the Emergency Shelter Home. Incumbents work under close supervision within established guidelines and parameters
The Social Service Aide-BJMRH differs from the Social Service Aide in that the former requires skills and abilities specifically necessary for working at the Emergency Shelter Home. The Social Service Aide differs from the Social Worker in that the former requires a lower level of skill and training than the level required of a professional Social Worker.
Position Duties
- Perform daily housekeeping chores, such as cleaning bathroom, vacuuming, mopping, and dusting; change bed linens for smaller children and supervise older children in the making of their beds.
- Apply group supervision skills; supervise children in indoor and outdoor recreational activities, such as crafts, games, television, and athletics.
- Conducts ongoing client needs assessments and verifies needs by contacting medical and health services providers.
- Assist with children's personal hygiene, including bathing, showering, dressing, mending, diapering and toilet training.
- Intervenes with crisis intervention, typically in a supportive role. Calls for supervisory support, when necessary.
- Presents client assessments to professional staff for approval.
- Completes narrative reports regarding a client's condition and services provided
- and/or recommended.
- Assist children with school homework and impose restrictions as necessary.
- Makes client referrals to medical personnel or social workers as needed.
- Administer first aid and CPR according to established guidelines.
- Monitors the medical and psychological care of abused children.
- Supervises visits between parents and children to prevent detrimental and reports observations to social.
- Transport children to school, physician appointments, and local recreation activities.
- May testify in juvenile court hearings.
- Assists Social Workers in providing a variety of child social services.
- Acts as liaison between clients and professional staff, individuals and groups in the community serviced.
- Directly assists families in using and learning about the resources of society, particularly medical, legal and employment services.
- Reports all suspected child abuse in accordance with California law.
- Maintains records of work performed, and performs other related work as required. Performs related duties as assigned.

- Basic methods and attitudes involved in the in-home care of physically ill, handicapped or disabled persons and adequate food preparation with limited kitchen equipment.
- Implement the shelter program of care and intervention.
- Care of infants and toddlers.
- Care of children with behavioral, developmental, educational or emotional problems.
- Interview persons to obtain a variety of information applicable to the provision of social services.
- Understand and accept differences in human behavior resulting from cultural, economic or other forms of deprivation.
- Administer basic first aid.
- Organize and direct children's recreational, social, and group living activities.
- Deal with physically, emotionally and/or sexually abused children.
- Prepare basic written reports.
- Recognize and report specific indications of need for social services.
- Maintain confidential information in accordance with legal standards and/or County regulations.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationship with departmental staff, local agencies, community organizations and the public.
- Effectively communicate verbally and in writing.

EXAMINATION INFORMATION
TRAINING & EXPERIENCE EXAMINATION – WEIGHTED 100%
The Training & Experience Examination is designed to elicit a range of specific information regarding each candidate’s knowledge, skill, abilities, and potential to effectively perform the duties relative to the classification. Responses to the questionnaire will be assessed based on pre-determined rating criteria. All applicants must complete the entire examination to receive a score. In order to obtain a position on the eligible list, candidates must receive a minimum rating of 70% on the examination.
Examination administration and processing time is approximately two weeks after the closing date of the job bulletin.
BILINGUAL TESTING
This job posting is for a bilingual position. Job applicants must meet the minimum qualifications as outlined in the job bulletin and be successful in the interview process. As a condition of employment, candidates who are selected for hire must receive a qualifying proficiency score on the Spanish bilingual certification examination(s) administered by MSS.

ILR Level 3 - Professional Working Proficiency: At this rating, bilingual persons are able to speak and write the required language effectively with sufficient structural accuracy and vocabulary. Persons can participate effectively in most conversations on practical, social, and professional topics. They can discuss special fields of competence with reasonable ease. Their vocabulary is broad enough that they seldom search for words. Persons at this level may have an obvious foreign accent but have good control of grammar and their errors virtually do not interfere with understanding or disturb native speakers.

SPANISH ORAL EXAMINATION
The oral examination is designed to elicit the full range of the target language to identify how well candidates use and control the language. The oral examination is administered over the phone and consists of a series of prompts (such as providing a description, discussing a hypothetical event, providing an opinion, etc.) requiring an oral response. Candidates will be evaluated on comprehension, communication, grammar, and vocabulary.
SPANISH WRITTEN EXAMINATION
The written examination is designed to evaluate the reading and writing proficiency of the candidate. The written examination is administered online and consists of several prompts presented in the target language. Candidates are required to provide a written response and will be evaluated on comprehension, expression, and mechanics.
ELIGIBLE LIST INFORMATION
A departmental open eligible list will be established for the county of Imperial. The list will be utilized for 12 months after it is established unless the needs of the service and conditions of the list warrant a change in this period.
RETEST PERIOD
Once you have taken the examination, you may not retest for SIX (6) MONTHS from the established eligibility date.
SPECIAL TESTING ARRANGEMENTS
