About the Department
An employee in this position performs technical and skilled work in the electrical operation, maintenance, and repair of specialized water and wastewater equipment including the water and wastewater treatment plants and pumping stations for Harnett Regional Water.
Hiring Range: $46,835.00
Position Duties
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION:
- Performs journey level electrical work in the operation, maintenance, and repair of large and specializes equipment and machinery in water and wastewater treatment plants and pumping stations.
- Performs control and electrical work on sewer lift stations, booster pump stations, and water/wastewater plants.
- Perform routine preventive maintenance of electrical equipment and maintain preventative maintenance records and schedules.
- Interpret electrical drawings, blueprints, schematics and diagrams for a variety of water and wastewater systems.
- Works on generators, pumps, and valves for the County.
- Must be able to drive and operate a vehicle to travel as needed.
- Maintains and repairs the electrical and control systems of a variety of pumps, and motors and other equipment in water and wastewater pumping stations.
- Assists pump and SCADA technicians with their work.
- Troubleshoots controls and pumps.
- Works on-call after hours as scheduled.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK:
- High school diploma supplemented by courses in electrical trades;
- Two (2) years of work experience in electrical maintenance;
- Or equivalent education and/or experience.
- Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license;
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of electrical trade skills used in the repair of electrical motors, pumps, control systems, supervisory control data acquisition systems, and various equipment.
- Knowledge of SCADA.
- Knowledge of operating principles and practices, and the maintenance requirements of water and wastewater plant equipment, controls and related machinery.
- Knowledge of methods, materials and tools used in instruments and electrical device repair.
- Knowledge of instrumentation calibration equipment.
- Knowledge of the safe use and operation and preventive maintenance of common electrical equipment.
- Knowledge of County policies and procedures.
- Skill in performing electrical maintenance and repair work.
- Ability to troubleshoot maintenance problems.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Must be able to perform heavy work exerting up to 20 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects; frequently requiring 30 pounds of force to move objects; and occasionally requiring to exert up to 100 pounds of force to move objects. This work also involves the physical abilities of balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling, grasping, handling, perceiving sounds at normal speaking levels, discriminating among sounds, kneeling, lifting, having manual dexterity, using mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, performing repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, expressing ideas by the spoken word, shouting to be heard above ambient noise, and walking. An incumbent must also possess the visual acuity to analyze data, work with color or depth perception, determine accuracy or observe equipment, operate motor vehicles or equipment, and inspect defects or fabricate parts.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The employee is subject to hazards associated with wastewater and electrical/mechanical operations including working in both inside and outside environments, in extreme hot and cold weather, and exposure to various hazards such as loud noises, vibrations, moving mechanical parts, electrical current, working on scaffolding, and exposure to chemicals fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, poor ventilation, and oils. The employee may be required to wear a respirator. Work also requires on-call and call-back responsibilities. Work around raw sewage is also subject to the final standards of OSHA on blood borne pathogens. Work at the water and wastewater plants, sewer lift stations and water pump stations and is on call 24/7.
