About the Department

The Department Head for the Department of Communication, Education, English & World Languages provides academic leadership, instructional oversight, and operational management for workforce and curriculum programs and general education disciplines including Early Childhood Education, Teacher & Educator Prep, Communication, English, American Sign Language, French and Spanish. This role includes teaching responsibilities as well as supervisory and administrative duties. This employee is responsible for coordinating and directing all courses and faculty, both for curriculum and workforce-continuing education courses; functions as faculty supervisor; and has duties including planning, managing, and evaluating course activities.

  • Ensure compliance with all institutional policies and procedures, relevant laws and accreditation requirements. 
  • Participate in college-wide committees and contribute to the formulation of institutional policies and practices. 
  • Organize and chair faculty meetings to discuss departmental issues, strategies, and policies monthly. 
  • Assign classes and approve schedules with program/discipline coordinators to meet the needs of students and ensure timely completion of programs of study. 
  • Manage classrooms and office spaces. 
  • Cancel classes, run SRSI reports, communicate with students, and re-register students as needed. 
  • Establish or participate in advisory boards that include representatives from agencies, businesses, alumni, and other community stakeholders. 
  • Monitor enrollment each semester and adjust offerings as needed. 
  • Submit overload and part-time contracts. 
  • Coordinate and collaborate with the Dean, instructors, directors, and student services to develop and maintain Guided Pathways, support crosswalk development, and expand opportunities for awarding credit for prior learning. 
  • Complete necessary paperwork, including personnel action forms and travel forms. 
  • Develop annual program reviews and assist in program reviews of additional programs in the department. 
  • Prepare reports and maintain records on departmental activities, budgets, and other matters. 
  • Maintain the programs of study within the department and ensure compliance with accrediting bodies and NCCCS Curriculum Standards. 
  • Conduct annual performance evaluations of full-time, part-time instructors, directors, and staff, including semester check-ins and goal setting. 
  • Actively participate in all meetings involved in the intensive review process and collaborate with the research and planning team to ensure programs remain dynamic, competitive, and aligned with evolving educational and industry landscapes. 
  • Provide oversight of the Writing and Speaking Lab

Minimum Qualifications

  • A master's degree or equivalent academic credential in a field of study pertinent to the program subjects offered in the School of Communication, Education, English & World Languages (Communication, Education, English, American Sign Language, French or Spanish). 
  • Two years of successful teaching experience in a community college or similar postsecondary institution.?

Supervisory responsibilities:
  • Recruit, hire, and evaluate instructors, providing guidance, professional development opportunities, and feedback on their performance. 
  • Mentor new faculty and assist in their professional growth and integration into the department. 
  • Conduct annual performance evaluations of both full-time and part-time instructors, including regular check-ins and goal setting aligned with departmental needs. 
  • Serve as the hiring manager for full-time instructors within the department. 
  • Work with WCE directors to develop and run continuing education classes. 
  • Monitor faculty teaching loads. 
  • Moderate issues that arise between students and/or faculty within the classroom and/or program. 
Program Management
  • Develop and oversee the department's academic programs to ensure they meet the needs of students and align with college standards and goals. 
  • Facilitate the review and development of curriculum and instructional materials. 
  • Ensure that teaching methods, materials, and syllabi adhere to college policies and promote effective learning. 
  • Work with industry leaders to ensure that the curriculum is aligned with job market demands and industry standards. 
  • Engage with other community colleges to share best practices, resources, and potentially co-develop programs. 
  • Advocate for and implement new academic initiatives and technologies that enhance the educational experience. 
  • Collaborate with eLearning specialists to ensure that online learning tools and platforms are effectively integrated into the curriculum, identifying courses that could benefit from digital enhancements and ensuring online materials meet educational standards and learning objectives. 
  • Maintain the quality of online courses by regularly reviewing and assessing the effectiveness of eLearning content. 
  • Mentor new faculty and assist in their professional growth and integration into the department. 
  • Instruct 12-15 contact hours annually. Overloads should not be undertaken. 
Financial Management
  • Manage the department's budget, ensuring resources are allocated effectively to support educational and operational needs. 
  • Ensure expenditures align with institutional goals and are documented in compliance with college financial policies. 
  • Oversee the maintenance and procurement of equipment and resources necessary for teaching. 
Other Duties
  • Foster an environment conducive to student learning and success. 
  • Address student concerns and issues, providing solutions and guidance when necessary. 
  • Oversee student advising within the department, ensuring that advisors provide accurate and helpful guidance to students. 
  • Coordinate with student services to ensure that students taking online courses receive adequate support, including access to technical help, tutoring, and advising services. 
  • Collaborate with the Dean and the institution's marketing and communications teams to develop effective marketing strategies and materials. 
  • Contribute to the creation of marketing content such as brochures, websites, newsletters, and social media posts. 
  • Collaborate with the Dean to partner with universities for transfer agreements and collaborative programs that allow students to continue their education seamlessly. 
  • Collaborate with the Dean to build relationships with local high schools for student recruitment and facilitate smooth transitions for students entering secondary education. 
  • Collaborate with the Dean to foster partnerships with local businesses, schools, and community organizations to enhance educational opportunities and community involvement. 
  • Assume other appropriate duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Dean, Associate Vice Provost, Provost, or President in meeting the needs of the college.?

Travel required: The Department Head will need to travel between campuses as well as other sites within Moore and Hoke Counties as well as North Carolina to attend meetings as well as participate in professional development opportunities.  Occasional travel out of the state may be necessary for professional development or meetings related to accreditation.
