Position Title: 6th Grade Social Studies Teacher (Long Term Substitute)
Location: Sanford Middle School
Reports To: Building Principal
Position Summary:
Sanford Middle School is seeking a dynamic, student-centered educator to join our team as a 6th Grade Social Studies Teacher. The successful candidate will inspire curiosity and critical thinking while engaging students in the study of geography, ancient civilizations, and global cultures. The ideal candidate demonstrates a strong commitment to creating an inclusive, collaborative, and supportive classroom environment that fosters both academic and personal growth.
Responsibilities:
Plan and deliver engaging instruction aligned with district curriculum and Maine Learning Results.
Incorporate a variety of instructional strategies, including inquiry-based learning, discussion, and hands-on projects.
Integrate literacy and technology to enhance student learning and engagement.
Create and maintain a positive, respectful classroom culture that promotes curiosity, citizenship, and collaboration.
Use formative and summative assessments to monitor student progress and adjust instruction as needed.
Collaborate with grade-level and content-area colleagues to support student success across disciplines.
Communicate effectively with students, families, and colleagues.
Participate in professional development, team meetings, and school initiatives.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Education or related field or experience.
Valid Maine Teacher Certification (K–8 or 6–12 Social Studies endorsement) or comparible work experience, CHRC fingerprinting.
Demonstrated knowledge of best practices in middle-level instruction and assessment.
Strong classroom management, communication, and organizational skills.
Commitment to fostering equity, inclusion, and cultural awareness in the classroom.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience teaching middle school students
Familiarity with interdisciplinary or project-based learning.
Interest in integrating current events, civic engagement, and global awareness into instruction.
