SUMMARY Under direct supervision, performs mechanical repair and maintenance work on motor vehicles, heavy equipment, mowing equipment, and power tools used by the District.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Performs repairs and preventative maintenance on golf cars and trucksters, including gas engines and electric motors and all types of bodies.
Determines scope of repairs needed on automotive and landscaping equipment
Repairs, maintains and troubleshoots gasoline and diesel powered and unpowered equipment, including trucks, tractors, automobiles, mowing equipment, trailers, small engine powered equipment, snow blowers, brooming equipment, tractor mounted implements, high lifts, snow plows, wood chippers, spraying equipment, and heavy automotive equipment
Performs repairs to mechanical systems including tires on automotive, landscape and construction equipment, hydraulic and air brakes, electrical systems, hydraulics, clutches, pto’s, steering, suspensions, engines, drivetrains, transmissions, differentials, exhausts, body components and specialized accessory equipment
Removes units such as engine.
Repairs or replaces parts such as pistons, rods, gears, valves, and bearings.
Overhauls or replaces carburetors, blowers, generators, distributors, starters, and pumps.
Rebuilds parts such as crankshafts and cylinder blocks.
Rewires ignition system, lights, and instrument panel.
Relines and adjusts brakes, aligns front end, repairs or replaces shock absorbers, and solders leaks in radiators.
Replaces and adjusts headlights, and installs and repairs accessories such as radios, heaters, mirrors, and windshield wipers.
Raises vehicle, with hydraulic jack or hoist, to gain access to mechanical units bolted to the underside of the vehicle.
Loads, unloads and hauls equipment
Drives and operates District’s vehicles and heavy equipment such as dump trucks, loaders, backhoes, trenchers and tractors
Retrieves inoperable or stuck vehicles and equipment
Operates power equipment and hand tools in a safe and efficient manner
Sharpens blades and reels for mowing equipment.
Steam cleans and paints motor equipment.
Immediately reports all accidents and unsafe conditions.
Performs the job safely and in compliance with District policies, procedures, work and safety rules, and the employee handbook
Maintains a clean and organized work environment
Additional functions may be essential
Performs other duties as assigned
MARGINAL DUTIES
Plans work procedure.
Perform welding on equipment and apparatus.
Assists other supervisors and departments in the performance of construction and maintenance activities.
Mends damaged body and fenders by hammering out and welding broken parts.
Pays strict attention to housekeeping in work area and the general facility.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE Associate’s degree (A.A.) or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school; or six months to one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
LANGUAGE SKILLS Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
REASONING ABILITY Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. Ability to utilize effective time management skills and be able to work under the stress of multiple deadlines, requests from others and interruptions, with accuracy.
