Summary/Objective
This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Essential Functions
- Ensures Y is attractive and clean by completing all duties listed on the daily schedule and maintains upkeep of assigned area and equipment.
- Must have hands on experience working in general maintenance (carpentry, electrical, drywall, painting, HVAC etc.)
- Works with Building Services Director on snow removal and grounds keeping.
- Performs preventative maintenance on equipment with proven skills.
- Records and reports all needed repairs; repairs facility and property as directed.
- Ensures YMCA building and property is secure during shift and report incidents and hazardous conditions to supervisor.
- Replaces soap, paper towels, and other supplies.
- Safely operates motorized equipment.
- Provide support and coverage for building services operations as needed across YMCA branch locations during events, staff vacations, emergencies, or periods of turnover to ensure continuity of facility maintenance and safety standards.
- Working knowledge of cleaning and repair methods.
- Provide support and coverage for building services operations at other YMCA branch locations during staff vacations, emergencies, or periods of turnover to ensure continuity of facility maintenance and safety standards.

There are no supervisory responsibilities for the Maintenance Assistant.

- Frequently required to: climb stairs, bend, stoop, kneel, twist, reach with hands, sit, stand for an extended period of time, climb ladders, walk, shovel snow, plow snow
- Occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds from floor to waist, waist to head and above head
- Occasionally push/pull 50 pounds back and forth
- Always have finger dexterity, grasp, perform repetitive motions, talk, hear, and have visual acuity.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work
The Maintenance Assistant will work full-time hours and be available during the day to assist in projects around the different Duluth Area Family YMCA properties. Typical schedule will be Sunday – Thursday or Monday – Friday. This position will be split between the Downtown Duluth, the Essentia Wellness Center and the Superior Branches.
Travel
- The work is performed both indoors and outside and will require travel to various locations, including other branch and camp locations.

Required Education and Experience
- Required certifications: CPR, AED, First Aid, and CPO training can be provided and must be obtained within 60 days of hire.
- Associates Degree in related field
- Minimum of 1-3 years of experience in a maintenance role
- Knowledge of cleaning methods and equipment.
- Basic understanding of the upkeep and care of equipment.
- Experience working with paint, cleaning equipment, chemical compounds, solvents, cleaners, and solutions in dry, liquid, powder, spray, and aerosol forms.
- Ability to work in conditions that will create dirt and dust.
- Experience operating motorized equipment.
- Commitment of supporting principles of equal opportunity and affirmative action to achieve a diverse work environment.
Preferred Education and Experience
- 1-3 years of experience providing maintenance to commercial facilities and properties
- Knowledge of best practices for maintaining properties for upkeep and longevity
- Experience with maintaining pools

- Must be able to pass a background check.
