Job Summary: The Housekeeping Coordinator serves as the working supervisor between the Director of Horticulture and Grounds and the housekeeping team. This role is responsible for ensuring the daily cleanliness and appearance of Zoo Knoxville’s grounds and facilities while providing direction, scheduling, and hands-on support to the housekeeping staff. The Housekeeping Coordinator sets the standard for quality, safety, and customer service, ensuring a positive experience for guests and staff alike.
Job Responsibilities:

Create and manage daily housekeeping schedules to ensure appropriate staffing and coverage.
Oversee and support the team in the day-to-day execution of cleaning and maintenance tasks.
Provide direct supervision, training, and feedback to hourly housekeeping staff.
Ensure cleanliness and proper upkeep of restrooms, pathways, facilities, waste/recycling receptacles, and common areas.
Maintain and restock supplies and equipment; ensure proper storage and usage.
Operate housekeeping equipment and vehicles safely and efficiently.
Inspect work areas regularly, address issues promptly, and ensure work orders are completed accurately.
Support Zoo Knoxville’s sustainability initiatives and model core values.
Assist guests by providing accurate directions and friendly customer service.
Enforce safety procedures and train staff on safe work practices.
Collaborate with other Zoo departments to support events, exhibits, and visitor experience needs.
Complete daily reports on activities, materials, and time management.
Perform custodial duties alongside the team, including cleaning, minor repairs, and event setup/teardown.
Other duties as assigned by the Director of Horticulture and Grounds, COO, or CEO.
Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED required.
Minimum 3 years of housekeeping/custodial experience, including 1 year in a lead or supervisory role.
Valid Tennessee driver’s license.
Strong leadership and team management skills with ability to motivate and train staff.
Proficiency with custodial equipment, cleaning methods, and safety procedures.
Ability to prioritize tasks, schedule staff, and adapt to changing needs.
Excellent customer service and communication skills.
Ability to perform moderate to heavy physical labor, including lifting up to 50 lbs, climbing, and repetitive motion.
Working knowledge of Google applications and basic computer use.
Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Experience in a zoological or similar environment preferred.

WORKING CONDITIONS: As an employee of Zoo Knoxville, you must possess English communication skills as well as the ability to communicate using a 2-way radio, email, and telephone. The position hours vary depending on business needs and will require weekend and some holiday shifts. Depending on the specific tasks, this position will be required to work within close proximity of exotic and domestic animals and must be aware that there are dangers inherent in working under those conditions.
