RESEARCH ASSISTANT Human Resource Services

The Superintendent invites qualified and interested persons to apply for the position of Research Assistant within the Human Resource Services.
This title is governed by the New Jersey Civil Service Commission; meaning that a candidate for the position will be placed as a provisional employee. At a later date the candidate will be required to take an examination administered by the Civil Service Commission. Candidates must score and rank high enough on this examination in order to remain in the position as a permanent employee.
DEFINITION: Under direction, conducts research and statistical studies to compile and report information on unit programs; does related work as required.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS Note: Applicants must meet one of the following or a combination of both experience and education. Thirty (30) semester hour credits are equal to one (1) year of relevant experience.
Five (5) years of professional experience conducting research and statistical studies.
OR
Possession of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; and one (1) year of the above-mentioned professional experience.
Note: "Professional experience" refers to work that is analytical, evaluative, and interpretive; requires a range of basic knowledge of the profession's concepts and practices; and is performed with the authority to act and make accurate and informed decisions.
License: Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
BASIC FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Performs the work involved to conduct specific research and statistical studies. 2. Conducts surveys, researches literature and analyzes raw data. 3. Participates in research conferences, meetings, and other activities to develop resources concerning research and statistics. 4. Keeps current of research project studies, publications, developments, and trends, and maintains a reference library. 5. Performs statistical analyses and interpretations with methods commonly used in the development of statistical and research data. 6. Conducts searches, reads and prepares critical analyses, summaries, and reviews of literature concerned with the subject matter. 7. Prepares reports containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations. 8. Maintains essential records and files. 9. Develops new reporting systems. 10. Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and computerized information systems used by the agency, office, or related units. 11. Perform other duties and tasks assigned by supervisor.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES 1. Knowledge of the methods used to gather and analyze data. 2. Knowledge of survey and data collection techniques. 3. Ability to gather and analyze information. 4. Ability to conduct research studies. 5. Ability to prepare reports containing findings, conclusions and recommendations. 6. Ability to establish and maintain essential records and files. 7. Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units. 8. Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication. 9.
