About the Department

Carteret Community College (Morehead City, NC) is accepting applications for a Maintenance Technician.   The Maintenance Technician II performs highly skilled maintenance and repair of plumbing, heating/cooling, refrigeration, carpentry, and electrical systems throughout the College facilities.

Annual Salary Range:  $38,131 to $47,664, commensurate with training and experience

Position Duties

  • Performs all types of service and repairs to facilities and equipment as it relates to commercial and residential systems--specifically HVAC, Plumbing, and Electrical.
  • Responsible for preventative maintenance on all mechanical systems according to the College's recommended schedule. 
  • Responsible for periodic reports, inspections, inventory, and time sheet.
  • Participates in storm preparedness and clean-up, as well as snow and ice removal, as needed.
  • Perform repair of various general construction and renovation tasks including ceiling, walls, and floors.
  • Assists in moving furniture, college event set-ups, take-downs, and cleanup.
  • Responds to emergencies during off-duty hours as needed.
  • Service on College committees and task forces as assigned.
  • Attend required campus events including graduation, professional development, and employee meetings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: High School diploma or equivalency, and trades classes or certifications related to one or more of the specialized areas.

Knowledge and Skills:

Four years or more of experience in the performance of the full range of journey level tasks associated with two or more highly complex mechanical or building trades, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Proficient computer skills, analytical aptitude, knowledge of local, state, and national codes pertaining to assigned trades and possess current knowledge of blueprint reading, standard concepts, practices, codes, and procedures within the construction field.

The employee is regularly required to use power tools, hand tools and instruments.  The employee frequently is required to walk, stand, climb ladders, and crawl in small, confined spaces.  The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and work in elevated locations up to 50 feet. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and peripheral vision, depth perception, color vision, and the ability to focus.

Licensing Requirement:  Valid driver's license.  

Certifications:  One of the following:  EAP Refrigeration, HVAC, Plumbing or other construction, mechanical or building trades certifications or four years of experience equivalent.  Forklift and personal life equipment certification by Carteret Community College are required 



Other Qualifications

Working Conditions and Environment:  The employee is exposed to outside weather conditions.  Regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, risk of shock and/or vibration, and loud noises at times.   Some evening work may be required.
