Position Overview:
This position reports directly to the Asphalt Paving Crew Chief and is responsible for leading multiple paving crews and assisting in the management of various paving projects. The role requires hands-on experience and a strong practical knowledge of all aspects of asphalt paving, particularly in managing large-scale or complex projects. The ideal candidate will demonstrate leadership, coordination skills, and a deep understanding of the city best practices to ensure high-quality project execution.
Position Duties
•Trains laborers and Asphalt Rakes in performance of job duties.
• Assists Crew Chief in planning large projects.
•Assists the Crew Chief by helping in the office with Crew Chief responsibilities.
•Evaluates new equipment to determine if it meets departmental needs.
•Sets up traffic control at worksite in accordance with safety policies and practices.
•Distributes, rakes, tamps, and soothes asphaltic materials on large and complex jobs.
•Performs large and difficult asphalt raking jobs where drainage is critical.
•Assigns jobs to members of the paving crew and checks and corrects the work of the paving crew.
•Determines mix needed to complete job and orders from vendor.
•Determines proper screed adjustment on spreader when paving streets.
•Uses jackhammer, compressor, extruder, ground pounder, and related equipment as needed.
•Repairs utility cuts (water, gas, City Light, and private contractors) by removing temporary material and replacing with permanent hot asphaltic material.
•Performs other related duties of a comparable level/type as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Four years of asphalt operations experience.
Orequivalent in any type of construction, installation, inspection, maintenance, repair, material transportation or materials application work, the ability to effectively operate an electronically controlled paving screed and supervisory experience.
Desired Qualifications:
• Two years of experience supervising crew members
• Knowledge on leading an asphalt crew
• Experience in heavy equipment such as paver
• Experience on job site safety
• Experience working asphalt raking jobs, laying out major paving programs
• Knowledgeable equipment such as paver and variety of different sides rollers.
License, Certification, and Other Requirements
•A valid State of Washington Driver's License or alternative mobility may be required.

The full salary range for this position is $44.44 - $48.12 per hour.
