Our mission is to deliver integrated energy solutions that build a resilient, intelligent, and flexible energy infrastructure - unlocking the way to an optimized renewable future. By integrating renewables, energy management technology, and storage with traditional energy resources, we reinvent clean energy production from the largest and most complex grids to the most remote and essential microgrids. We play a key role in Wärtsilä’s vision towards a 100% renewable energy future through flexibility, reliability, and integration and a more sustainable world for us all.

We are looking for a Temporary Power Systems Engineer (12-month contract) to contribute to the development of our power systems modeling tools. This role focuses on dynamic modeling of battery energy storage systems (BESS) in software like PSCAD, supporting grid code analysis and stability assessments of hybrid BESS + solar PV systems.

The successful candidate will join our Simulation and Data Science team in a Research and Development capacity, supporting the evolution of our software capabilities and new product development in automated power system optimization.

This position will be based in Herndon, VA and will be hybrid.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement dynamic models for BESS.

  • Transform data models and algorithms into software, conducting simulation tests to evaluate effectiveness.

  • Collaborate with the hardware testing team to refine battery system modeling.

  • Conduct grid code compliance studies.

  • Enhance internal models and tools to facilitate faster product development.

  • Document improvements to algorithms and models, explaining the structure and rationale behind new methods.

  • Adapt to additional tasks outside the defined job scope as needed in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment.

Qualifications:

  • Currently pursuing a M.Sc. or Ph.D. degree in Power Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.

  • Solid understanding of electrical engineering principles.

  • Experience in modeling inverter-based resources.

  • Familiarity with modeling tools such as PSCAD and DIgSILENT.

  • Ability to work independently.

Desired Skills:

  • Experience with code-based modeling in PSCAD, PSS/E, and DIgSILENT.

  • Proficiency in Python and Fortran.

  • Strong attention to detail and follow-through on tasks.

  • Clear communication skills, with the ability to seek assistance when needed.

Additional Information: This role offers the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in power system optimization and modeling within a supportive and dynamic environment. If you’re ready to contribute to a renewable future, we encourage you to apply.
