Job Description

 

 

 

SUMMARY

The educational responsibilities are to instruct children in the disciplines encompassed by the prescribed written curriculum within the limits of each child’s aptitude and ability and provide models for children to become responsible contributors in a democratic society.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

 

Adhere to all federal, state, local and school district laws, rules, statutes, and policies.

 

Teach

  • Strives to implement by instruction and action the District’s philosophy of education and its instructional goals and objectives.
  • Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated.
  • Develops and maintains a classroom environment conducive to effective learning within the resources provided by the District.
  • Prepares lesson plans to provide written evidence of preparation to teach toward the established objectives of the course.
  • Employs a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media, consistent with the physical limitations of the location provided and the needs and capabilities of the students involved.
  • Will incorporate Higher Order Thinking, Engagement, Authentic connections and Technology into lessons.
  • Seeks assistance of District specialists for students believed to have learning difficulties and cooperate in building and administering an instructional program for those students defined as exceptional.
  • Establishes and maintains communication with students and parents concerning the academic and behavioral progress of all assigned students.
  • Makes provisions to assist students and parents for educational related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms.
  • Directs and attends to student misbehavior when it occurs in the teacher’s presence on school property and on school sponsored trips or activities.
  • Assists in implementing all policies and regulations governing student life and conduct within District property.
  • Develops reasonable written rules of classroom behavior and procedure and maintains order in the classroom in a fair and just manner as per philosophy of the District.
  • Plans and directs purposeful assignments for teacher assistant(s) and volunteer(s).

 

Records and Reports

  • Maintains accurate, complete and timely records and reports as required by law, District policy and administrative regulation (takes daily attendance in classes, assigns and records grades based on progress toward course objectives, keeps file on student progress, etc.).
  • Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities by:
  1. Being responsible for the reasonable security and care of instructional equipment (e.g. locking A-V equipment in closets).
  2. Reporting damage, loss, theft or depreciation of equipment, furniture or fixtures.
  3. Receiving and accounting for supplies and equipment.
  • Writes and maintains accurate subject matter plans which are available in the classroom; such plans should reflect the daily program as well as long-range objectives.

 

Assist

  • Furnishes data for enrollments, class sizes, budgets, inventories, and other administrative information.
  • Participates in the selection of textbooks and other teaching materials and equipment.
  • Contributes to and cooperates with coordinators, administrators, and other members of the staff in planning instructional goals, objectives, curriculum and methods.
  • Attends and participates in departmental and school faculty meetings.
  • Assists in screening and selecting students for departmental awards, honor societies and scholarships.
  • Serves on committees to plan field trips, special programs, in-service programs and reports for accrediting associations.
  • Accepts a share of co-curricular activities as assigned.
  • Assists in development of criteria and instruments for course (curriculum) evaluation.
  • Grows professionally through an ongoing program of reading, workshops, seminars, conferences, and/or advanced course work at accredited institutions of higher learning.
  • Assists fellow teachers by assuming responsibility for their students if they are away on field trips or athletic events, suddenly taken ill or called from their classrooms for some related activities.
  • Performs duties as assigned by the building principal or designee (homeroom, playground duty, after school duty, etc.).

 

 

 

 

EVALUATIONS

Performance shall be evaluated in accordance with the Board’s Policy on Appraisal.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS  To perform this job successfully, an individual must have a sincere interest in teaching.  The individual must exhibit behavior showing patience, loyalty, sympathy, maturity, poise, voice control, dependability, friendliness and other commonly accepted traits indicative of potential success as a teacher.  The individual must show an ability to plan for and teach toward the varying aptitudes and abilities of students. This person must be able to provide to the school district current clearances as per Acts 34 and 151.

 

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

Baccalaureate degree in the subjects required for a particular teaching assignment.

 

 

CERTIFICATION

Appropriate certification for the particular teaching assignment as approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.

l Ascending – Directly responsible to the building principal or designee

l Descending – Direct authority over students in assigned classes, assigned activities, the school building generally and in accordance with the School Laws of Pennsylvania.

l Coordinate – Cooperates with other teachers and all school personnel.

 

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Reading: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.

Writing: Ability to write reports, school correspondence, and procedure manuals.

Presentation: Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators, managers, employees, students, and/or the general public.

 

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

 

 

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to deal with problems involving a variety of concrete variable in standardized situations.
