Position Summary:

DG Foods is currently looking for MSC and Shipping Superintendent to be a part of our day shift management team at our Bastrop, LA facility.  The MSC and Shipping Superintendent is responsible for overseeing shipping operations in the poultry processing and Mechanically Separated Chicken (MSC) departments.  As well as supporting the supply chain department. This role is crucial in ensuring that production goals are met efficiently and safely while maintaining the highest standards of product quality, regulatory compliance, and team performance. The Superintendent will play a key role in driving continuous improvement initiatives and fostering a positive work environment. This position reports to the Plant Manager.

 Essential Job Functions:

 Job duties are as follows, but not limited to: 

  • Oversee all aspects of Shipping and MSC production for the plant, ensuring optimal workflow and adherence to production schedules and on-time loading.
  • Responsible for all shipments leaving the plant are timely and correct to customers.
  • Coordinates with supervisors to allocate manpower, equipment, and materials efficiently.
  • Monitors production metrics to ensure targets for yield, efficiency, and product quality are achieved.
  • Ensures the achievement of the production goal of processed pounds per shift and per man-hour, while staying at or below predetermined budgeted cost.
  • Enforces Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for processing and MSC operations.
  • Ensures compliance with USDA, HACCP, and other regulatory standards, as well as company policies and guidelines.
  • Conducts routine inspections of production areas, equipment, and processes to ensure cleanliness, safety, and adherence to quality standards.
  • Collaborating with the Quality Assurance team to address any non-compliance issues promptly.
  • Provides direct supervision and support to department supervisors and team leads, ensuring clear communication of expectations and priorities.
  • Fosters a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement within the 2nd shift workforce.
  • Demonstrate effective leadership by consistently embodying the principles and values you wish to inspire in others, setting a strong example through your actions and decisions.
  • Identifies training needs and coordinates skill development initiatives to enhance employee performance.
  • Ensures accurate labor tracking and reporting within your department.
  • Promotes and enforces a safe working environment, ensuring adherence to all safety protocols, and conducts regular safety meetings.
  • Collaborate with the maintenance team to ensure all equipment is functioning properly and preventive maintenance schedules are followed.
  • Respond promptly to equipment breakdowns or other operational disruptions to minimize downtime.
  • Analyzes production data to identify areas for improvement in efficiency, quality, and cost-effectiveness.
  • Leads and/or participates in process improvement projects aimed at optimizing operations.
  • Encourage employee feedback and innovative ideas to enhance departmental performance.
  • Maintain accurate records of production metrics, employee attendance, and operational issues.
  • Follow up to ensure all shift paperwork is completed and turned in daily.
  • Communicate shift updates and relevant information to other shifts and management as needed.
  • Monitor and ensure monthly performance evaluations on key metrics, including:
    • Total processed pounds per shift.
    • Pounds per man-hour.
    • Cost per pound.
    • Labor efficiency for both direct and indirect labor categories.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

 Supervisory Job Functions

  • Effectively manage a total staff of 5 associates in Shipping and 11 associates in MSC.
  • Supervise, coach and train employees, providing professional development through ongoing feedback of strengths and needed improvement.
  • Manage employee performance, providing positive and/or corrective feedback.

 Job Requirements:

  • At least five (5) years working in a management role, preferably in a poultry processing industry, with specific experience managing shipping operations.  Other combinations of education and experience will be considered.
  • Strong leadership and management skills in a high paced environment.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills.
  • At least eighteen (18) years of age.
  • Must be legally eligible to work in accordance with federal and state law.
  • Must have dependable transportation to and from DG Food facilities, no exceptions.
  • Must be able to work various hours/holidays/weekends as required.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to work in a cold and wet environment.
  • Ability to work in an office environment.
  • Ability to lift and maneuver up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
