When formalized, Volunteer Coordinators registered and educated volunteers of their rights and responsibilities, began recording volunteer hours to indicate the value of the time volunteers performed. The volunteer unit supports all staff and all volunteers to create a streamlined and efficient process to create work parties for public and private groups large and small. 

This position plays a very critical role in the oversight, maintenance and update of the Volgistic and NSCI volunteer databases. Several years of experience and technical knowledge is required to fulfill the duties required to navigate through the Volgistics and NSCI system to identify and record new and existing processes. The position will also be responsible for reviewing current language in Volunteer Unit SharePoint and propose edits that streamlines information and brings more clarity and uniformity to site in the areas of Recreation and Ground Maintenance.

Position Duties

The Volunteer Coordinator at Seattle Parks and Recreation is responsible for implementing all volunteer programs, fostering a culture of volunteerism, and ensuring the department’s mission is carried out through volunteer efforts. Key responsibilities include:

  • Coordinating volunteer appreciation events and recognition initiatives.
  • Maintaining a positive atmosphere for volunteers that promotes retention and empowers them.
  • Recruiting, training, and supporting volunteers.
  • Orienting volunteers to programs and services.
  • Supporting volunteers in finding opportunities to contribute.
  • Managing and coordinating the volunteer and community outreach program.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
Requires two years of college coursework in personnel, recreation, social services, public administration, or related discipline and two years of experience in personnel, social service or recreation program to include six months in coordinating a volunteer program (or a combination of training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class).
Work Environment/Physical Demands
Work is performed in a normal City work/office environment and field locations.
License, Certification and Other Requirements
Current Washington State driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Several years of experience managing and updating Volgistic Volunteer Database
  • Several years of experience working as a volunteer community organizer and program event coordinator.
  • Oversaw volunteer recruitment, documentation and coordination for large-scale events.
  • Create recruitment, screening and onboarding plans for underserved volunteer group

Other Qualifications

The full salary range for this position is $40.34 - $46.95 per hour.
