About the Department
The IT Systems Engineer I is responsible for supporting the City of Milton’s technology infrastructure, with a strong emphasis on maintaining reliable and secure services for the Public Safety Complex and other municipal operations. This position focuses on help desk operations, server and storage systems, and cloud-based applications, while also contributing to the City’s cybersecurity posture.
The Systems Engineer I serves as a key technical resource for front-line help desk support issues, ensuring systems remain secure, compliant, and up to date. In collaboration with the Information Services Director, this role helps support cybersecurity efforts, system upgrades, and operational improvements.
Position Duties
The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary.
- Provide front-line help desk support, resolving user issues in a timely and professional manner.
- Administer and support Windows servers, storage systems, and virtualized environments.
- Assist with the administration of Microsoft 365 services and other cloud-based applications.
- Monitor and support the City’s backup and disaster recovery systems, ensuring data integrity and availability.
- Participate in cybersecurity initiatives, including monitoring, compliance, and user awareness.
- Document troubleshooting procedures, configurations, and workflows to promote knowledge sharing.
- Collaborate with Public Safety staff to ensure mission-critical systems remain secure and operational.
- Participate in technology rollouts, upgrades, and project support as directed.
- Provide after-hours support on a rotating basis or during emergency incidents.
- Support other functions of the Information Services Department.
- The IT Systems Engineer I must be able to operate a motor vehicle to travel between City facilities and work sites in order to provide technical support and participate in projects as required.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field; bachelor’s degree preferred.
- 2–4 years of professional experience in IT systems support, systems administration, or a related technical role.
- Experience supporting public sector or public safety IT systems preferred.
- A valid State of Georgia Driver’s License and the ability to maintain a satisfactory motor vehicle record.
- Knowledge of Windows Server environments, Active Directory, and Group Policy management.
- Familiarity with networking technologies (TCP/IP, firewalls, VPNs, switches, routers).
- Experience with virtualization platforms (VMware, Hyper-V).
- Working knowledge of cloud-based services, including Microsoft 365 and Azure.
- Familiarity with cybersecurity best practices and system hardening techniques.
- Exposure to public safety solutions such as Central Square or Hexagon RMS, CAD, and Mobile systems.
- Familiarity with Absolute Secure Access, Cradlepoint routers and NetCloud console, FirstDue, First Arriving, Tyler Technologies Incode and ERP solutions, and PaperCut print management.
