About the Department

Under general supervision, inspects sanitation conditions in neighborhoods, taking necessary steps to correct violations of the garbage and trash ordinance; notifies citizens of violations; issues citations when necessary to insure compliance. Performs other related duties as required. Please note this is a temporary position for up to 5 months.

Position Duties

• Enforces the garbage and trash ordinance; inspects neighborhoods for violations
• Receives, investigates and resolves complaints from citizens and other City staff; makes referrals when necessary
• Makes systematic, street-by-street inspections of the City to insure compliance
• Promptly investigates and inspects complaints of reported violations of garbage and trash ordinance
• Collects evidence at violation site; educates and informs citizens of ordinances
• Issues notices of violation to offenders and reinspects the violations
• Keeps complete and accurate records of each notice of violation
• Complies list of litter problems area for inmate litter pickup program
• Monitor rental evictions by county authorities
• Utilizes a variety of equipment and materials, including a computer, telephone, etc.
• Prepares and presents cases before City Court of City Council as necessary
• Provides solutions to complaints so as to conform to existing City codes in order to prevent lawsuits

Minimum Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED
• Two years’ experience in Solid Waste Collection and/or Code Enforcement
• Must possess a valid South Carolina driver’s license
• Working knowledge of computers is preferred
• Must be able to exert up to twenty pounds of force frequently
• Physical demands are in excess of sedentary work

Other Qualifications

Salary depends upon experience. Starting salary is $22.17 per hour.
