Position Overview:

Assists the Microbiology Supervisor in the daily operation of the laboratory. Acts as technical resource to technicians and Microbiologists in the Laboratory. Ensures that all areas identified as Principal Responsibilities are accomplished in an efficient, professional manner.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist management in training staff on laboratory tasks and perform associated training assessments.
  • Assist Supervisor in creating weekly task schedules and ensure completion of all daily laboratory tasks. Delegate tasks to accommodate efficient workflow.
  • Assist management in performing monthly meetings with technicians.
  • Assist management as needed in problem solving and investigations, including Non-Conformance investigations
  • Perform verification activities, including verification of autoclave cycle loads, verification of infectious disease testing send-outs, and verification of culture stains.
  • Responsible for managing CIMScan, including acknowledging warnings and alarms.
  • Act as a technical resource to Technicians and Microbiologists in the laboratory.
  • Perform Microbiologist Principal Responsibilities as needed, including but not limited to:
    • Reading, reporting results, and sub-culturing microbiological culture samples (Negative Bench and Reporting)
    • Performing and reporting bacterial identifications associated with microbiological samples, proficiently.
    • Completing serological test requests (and associated tasks)
    • Performing quality control testing of incoming media, kits/reagents, and microbiological materials
  • Perform Technician Principal Responsibilities as needed, including but not limited to:
    • Microbiological testing of tissue specimens and medical devices
    • Environmental monitoring
  • Effectively complete “other” functions that may be assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology or a related scientific field.
  • Approved certification in Microbiology (National or State) preferred.
  • 3 years of experience working in a Microbiology Laboratory
  • Must have broad knowledge and understanding of Microbiology related SOPs, and be able to train others.
  • Must be detailed oriented.
  • Must have good communication skills (written and oral).
  • Must be a self-starter, alert for situations requiring action, confident of being able to think situations through, possess the ability to work independently with minimal supervision and reliable in following through and completing assignments.
  • Must be opened-minded, flexible, and able to adapt easily and accept new ideas quickly
  • Must demonstrate reliability, leadership skills, and the ability to delegate tasks.
